Well you can get the wool of a sheep... but 100% bamboo batting is a bit harder. I've always used synthetics but I'm looking get the 50-50 blend the next time I re-do the padding in my stuff.

Re: repoussed shield boss
Just heating it won't fully anneal it, the time with the lead holding the heat anneals it. And you're right, steam kills. And you should never mix hot and cold if it can be helped.

Re: repoussed shield boss
When I melt the lead into my pieces, I make a rig to suspend the piece over my forge. I get the metal red hot and then start putting quarter sized shavings into the dished piece that I wish to work on. I do this until it's full and leave the steel at red hot for about 20-30 mins and then turn my for...

Those are defiantly pretty! I'm not sure if they would have even bothered to do that inside work, but it really shows the love that you have for your work! I LOVE that hinge detail that you put into them. One point of criticism, from what I see, it looks like you should peen that pin in there. I'm n...

I have another question about pitch. Do you put it in hot? And if you do, what are the annealing properties of it compared to lead? I know once I pour the lead into my pieces, they're pretty much dead soft when I go to work them...

Can you explain the process of using the pitch? I've used lead before. Is pitch harder to remove once you're finished with it?

Re: How to start teaching someone "the craft" of making armo
I'd start them off on something small. 1 day projects. Day 1, cutting washers. Day 2 making hinge parts. Day 3 riveting together the hinge parts and the washers onto pieces of armour that you've made. Day 4, patterning out a great helm (starting with an established pattern) Day 5, cut out and shapin...

That would also depend on the finish when the piece was in the ground, soil pH, average temperature and waterfall in the region, depth of the piece as it pertains to O2 penetration... Usually a piece close to the surface in a more acidic soil in a warm and wet environment will be destroyed very quic...

If it were that simple, you would be leaving the world worse off if you believe what is written in your signature. I see no problem with discussing this piece in the open. The more people know it's a fake and why would be able to better spot fakes in the future. More information, even at the benefit...

I already asked Mac about some way we could have a private chat on how we could debate the authenticity of this piece without it being seen by the general public. I didn't see: Wear a non-flammable apron. Clothes, or fabric aprons catch fire when struck by hot stuff. My personal tally is two shirts and a cotton apron with a nice scorched-edge hole in it. I'm stubborn apparently. :) Sparks ARE fire. I do always wear double layer hearing protection though, ear...
