Hal, I don't remember seeing that Norman hat before. Very Purdy. Yeah that seems about the best way to do it. And really. No finger prints. OR you can make designs with your finger prints...

Re: Helm thickness variation data from Greek Helm
Well if you took a cast blank and hammered it to a finished form, wouldn't the majority of the casting marks disappear?

Re: An introduction, thanks, and bone picking
Welcome! It's usually best done in groups. Also, it doesn't near hurt my hands as much as my patience  Instead of using your fingers, bet some bent needle nose pliers. When I started weaving, I would make a series of chains alternating 2 rings and 1 ring, about 18 rows at a time. As I got d...

If you over lap the rings and the ring dia is large enough I think it could work, though you would probably be better served by getting a mig or tig welder to be honest.

I think a top down style could work rather well in this sort of thing. Basically hand automation, and different stamps could be provided... I'm going to assume that's similar to what they did back in the day?

Re: Laminated canvas for hidden/covered armor experiment
Consensus was, "Ya know, I don't think the linothorax ever was 100% linen. Mighta been hardened leather instead." Not quite. 1) layered textile armour was never made using glue - ever, in the entire history of warfare. It was always quilted. 2) what we know as the Greek "linothorax" was more likely...

Kon, I understand the principal, I'm just thinking about how it could be set up. Would a single step process work? Put in a soft jump ring, press down and end up with an overlapped, stamped and pierced ring ready to be woven?

Marcos, if that horn was forged from plate, I would love to see how you did so! Honestly, I think this would be best as a simple, decorative shaffron. I think that the way you have everything shaped as of now that it would be far too much work for the benefit. That being said, I would LOVE to see yo...

I think if it were for a real horse you would want a little more shape in the cheek plates near the ears and maybe have it not at quite that angle, hard to tell from the pics though. Did you make those hinges yourself?

Oh I would still measure and try for symmetry, they certainly tried to a degree, but I just think that they weren't nearly as critical as we are about it. I think it was much more about it looking right than measuring right.

I agree with Signo. It looks fine to my eye, and symmetry is rarely if ever found in "real" armour. It is made by hand.

How is it on the length? It seems a bit long to me, but if you reshape the shoulders that might not even be a problem... Is it a breast and back or just the breast? Either way it looks pretty solid with nice even rolls. I can't wait to see your pierce and file!

Okay that makes sense for patterns that keep repeating. But what about The Islamic maille that would have passages from the Koran? Was it all just the same passage? And if it was, that would have to be a very concise passage to fit all on one ring...

Not to hijack any threads, as there are a few floating around, how would you go about putting inscriptions on maille? Would you make a master stamp or would you stand it letter by letter?

Very cool! I defiantly like a sculpted face as opposed to just a plain bar grate. Two small bits of critism, 1) cut the mouth after the face is firmed 2) try and make a more pronounced chin. Other than that I think you nailed it! I really like the different finish on the ocular. Really makes it pop!
