Re: Working on a coat of plates

There's a decent rule of how much to long to cut it. L=2d. The length of the rivet sticking through the hole should be about 2 times the diameter of the hole. About and within reason.

Re: Hal's crazy idea # 347.01

I think I know of at least one girl that would like to umm.. order one in a discrete package... All kidding aside, Hal, that seems like it could be a rather useful tool and I can think of a few uses for it. ~heh tool~

Re: Working on a coat of plates

Depends on the rivet head. Usually that's the convention unless there is a decorative head that you want to show off. I've never ran into that case, plus I like showing off how well I can rivet.

Re: Any extant examples of mail like this?

Could be. And if you think, it really makes sense. If you have a light, thin foundation that your mail is pointed to as opposed to your arming cote, then you can wash your arming cote without having to worry about the mail, or even send the mail to be repaired while your cote is being washed, OR swi...

Re: Hammers/other tools for beginner amourer

First of all thank you all for your advice; it is very nice to know that there are people I can talk to about this sort of thing. As I mentioned before, I live in the bush, by that I mean a heavily wooded area and have access to a large supply of varying species of wood. Poplar, birch, pine are wha...

Funny that you mention all of that Kon. I imagine that I do things on both sides of the fence. Hard numbers at work, soft ones in the shop.

It could be broken as well. He looks as if he's injured and if you notice on his right arm, the mail does cling to the sleeve. The mail around the neck is kinda strange, but he could have had on a different type of BP that we are unaware of, low in the front with no gorget, maybe he wore a great hel...

Servus Schorsch, greetings from a fellow Landshuter (originally, anyway ;-) )! Looks mighty fine for a firsty, definitely better than mine back then. How is the articulation, up/down and left to right? Just one small observation: it looks like there might be a gap between the knuckle rider and the ...

Re: How to price?

You also want to try re-pricing stock items. If people see a low price, often they see it as being cheaply made. If that's the case, I try pricing into a higher bracket. It attracts new customers as well as making old customers think the value and quality have increased. That being said, if your stu...

Re: How to price?

Wow. WTC really said it right there! After all is said and done, which I figured out mostly according to WTC's and Halberd's explanation years ago, I charge $50.00/hour + aggravation. I usually round up to the nearest 15 minute mark. So lets say I have a nice simple customer who has a project that w...

If you want a quality to match the quality of your gauntlets, you'll have to make them or have them made to fit YOUR hand and not a generic hand of about your size.

Remember that you can make a hell of a lot of your forms and stakes out of wood. Use a dense type, I like oak. Holds up well and is easy to shape.
