*Any opinions expressed above are not necessarily those of Brian W. Rainey, Vice-President of the Armour Research Society. ARS BWR takes little, if any responsibility for any offense caused by previous statements. Once I crawl out of the bottom of this absolutely FABULOUS bottle, I am sure all will...

I have only one cuirass experience, and that's still in progress. It's rather straightforward late 14th c gothic design, modified very slightly in the globosity of the chest, raising the point where the breastplate sticks out most by a few cm, which gives more space for the breasts. Breasts are soft...

You could do the same thing with your pipe setup.. you would just need an inline pump.. and you can get htose battery operated as well... but I'd shy away from putting the heat _directly_ against the pipe.. steam bombs are not fun. The whole trick with the direct heating of the pipe I used for the ...

All you have to do is be the wining ticket. And with the additional 637 tickets you have purchased... you have an overwhelming chance! So I assume this is sold out then? Not quite.... At least I sincerely hope so that I haven't paid for those 637 tickets! What I think Brian is trying to say that th...

Today I got home my "planishing" hammer. I think I'll use it for dishing too. Will a 60 lbs hammerhead at 300 bpm be enough to move the metal? The whole thing weighs about 2000 lbs, it was an interesting experience getting it into the workshop, but friendly neighbours with big yellow machines are Go...

BTW, have you smelted me enough steel for the NEXT ARS hat, yet? Also, did you get hold of Patrick? I think he was planning to start the sallet the last weekend of his month. Not easy to fit in all the things I want to attend in the limited time available. Seems I won't be able to make it for the 3...

A good project has blood, sweat, and tears in it! It's only the third of those that i tend to skip. My latest: a new 120 grit belt, and a fingertip which is 1.5 mm shorter than it should be. Only half of those 1.5 mm was skin and nail... Hooray for superglue! The trick is indeed to make a small sacr...

Let's get a bit technical here First of all, there's the strength of the material when it comes to deformation: how much force does it take to bend or dent it? This depends in particular on the heat treatment of the spring steel. But then there's also the impact resistance, which has to do with the ...

Not being a metalurgist, just exactly what is the difference between "Medieval Steel" that would have been used in say, a 14th century helment and modern cold rolled mild? Just curious, if somebody wants to enlighten me. In a nutshell: all modern steel is clean and homogeneous; mediaeval steel is a...

Extrapolating this, hardened stainless seems to be the next logical step. Just a small preview of the future, for those who want to be first Nothing strange with that in the knife world, though still often frowned upon by the real die-hards. I have some of the stuff at home, very well suited for kni...

At the moment I'm working on a gothic cuirass, for and with a narrow waisted girl. It's the first one we're making, and we're just exploring to see where we end up. The breastplate is made up out of 4 segments, all of them riveted (or for now, bolted) in place without possibility for motion. It seem...

Ba-humbug! This wrought steel is just some old piece of a bridge, it wasn't even smelted in the proper style. Probably full of sulphur and other nasty pollutants from the coal they used. No, I think I'll forge my own sallet, with properly smelted steel, from a reconstructed 13th century blast furnac...

Ralph what kind of case hardening setup do you use? One mm pen. would do the trick if the superquench doesnt work. I've only done some simple experiments, just to see if it works: * Welded a small box, with tight fitting lid * Filled it with crushed coke * Tucked a few pieces of mild steel sheet in...

Up to HRC 48 according to the linked article. Depends on the steel type of course. Casehardened should put you somewhere around 60, perhaps 62 in the hardest parts. Tool steel I'd not go over 55 if you're going to beat on it, but that also depends on the alloy, and impact resistance of the steel. Wo...

Case hardening can be up to a few mm deep, if you send the stuff off to a professional place. Just covering it in case-n-ite or similar stuff, and hitting it with a torch for a few minutes will give you a very thin case. As I said, right equipment and know-how. With just a homebrew casehardening set...

Either would work, but requires the right equipment and know-how.
You could also try to harden the stakes you have in super-quench, ( http://www.lametalsmiths.org/news/robb_gunter.htm ) which should make them quite a bit harder.
