Re: We're Gonna Get Dwarf-Wannabes This Season
im not in the sca, nor have I been to any sca events but....... if a person is short and wants to be a dwarf you could help by steering them in the direction of a historical persona of someone who is also short and there must have been some, were there vikings who were 3' 6" rather than 6' 3" or may...

welcome Dave J
looks good to me but im no expert, there are many on here who are!
Im a bit north of you but if you go to the major events here in the UK no doubt we will meet some time.
I go to ILHF, TORM, tewkes and others and may be able to give you a few ideas for making tools as that is what I do

Re: Dam woodruff key any tips?
a few years ago I had literally hundreds of countersunk headed screws to remove from cast iron plus lots more with normal heads, others had tried and nearly every time the head had broken ( these had been in place about 100 years ). I found out that if I placed a nut over the head or the remains of ...

Re: Design considerations - leaf spring power hammer
you will probably find that without anything else your springs will be over the 15 pounds you are aiming for and you will want more than 3 speeds, you will probably want 3 ratio's and a speed controller.

as the tube is round but most handles on hammer are oval slightly flatten the tube to get the right shape and it will feel much better then add the fingered grip with some glue or a tape

Re: some things im working on...... ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!
have had delivered today 3 new motors have the metal for 2 anvils except the top plates which I should get this week (anvils need to be made first to be left for the concrete to go off) most of the metal frame parts are cut to size, lots of small details like drilling to do another crank to make, an...

Re: How to measure the power of a power hammer?
Thank you John a friend has put forward testing the impact with a plastic strip that you then measure the width of after drawing it through the hammer so the hits are different places, have heard of a system years ago called plastigauge or something for measuring bearing clearances in car engines. I...

Re: PowerHammers engineering question
maybe, if I can get the sort of equipment for measuring the speed in the final few mm we can work it out. a reason for my design using an 'unstable system' like it does to is make it work with different weights of hammer and still be controllable. so far with the same springs and only needing one nu...

Re: PowerHammers engineering question
at a couple of recent events I taken a portable dvd player and a 4 min vid of my hammer hitting first a piece of lead and then some hot metal and passed round the actual pieces, since then it has been improved quite a bit. I plan on doing the same in the spring events and will see what else I can do...

Re: PowerHammers engineering question
on mine I control the speed of a motor that is geared down to give 220 rpm at its normal speed, the motor drives a crank that is not directly linked to the arm with the hammer on it but has springs . going slow the hammer moves, going faster it is thrown from one spring to the other. a calculation l...

Re: How to measure the power of a power hammer?
looked at the tekscan stuff and it is for very low pressure like 7 PSI and pressure rather than an impact. will ask some digital gauge people to see what they think. maybe if I can get the KG force of mine and a few other types of hammer to compare it will help. at a couple of recent events I shown ...

Re: How to measure the power of a power hammer?
I feel your pain Wade, mine also varies the stroke length with speed but using the stored energy in 2 opposing springs there is quite a long dwell time at the top and some at the bottom and it can be seen that each stroke starts slow and increases in speed as it nears the anvil so near the moment of...

Re: How to measure the power of a power hammer?
I think the speed the hammer is traveling is not consistent, as the stroke starts it is slow then it gets faster till it hits, will that complicate things? will be seeing a friend into maths and may try filming it with a rule in site to see how fast it moves in different parts of the stroke, how muc...

How to measure the power of a power hammer?
I have been developing a small power hammer and cannot think of a way of measuring the force it produces. it is an 'unstable system' using springs, the static hammer weight is 9.3kg at the moment and speed is varied to control stroke length and power, max stroke I have measured is about 30cm at a sp...

actually even though it is not fixed down it does not move, one side of it on the floor is a stack of heavy plates and it cant move backwards so maybe it wants to move in one of those directions

now the v1.2 is installed I will start on v2 by ordering the motor and getting the parts ready for the new chassis, this week getting the metal for more anvils. the casing of the next 2 anvils is 152mm box section about 8mm thick ( 6" box 5/16" thick ) with a top plate 25mm thick mild steel ( 1" ) a...

Re: some things im working on...... ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!
just upped the static hammer weight from 8kg (17.6lbs ) to 9.3kg ( 20.5 lbs ) and max motor frequency from 34hz to 45hz and seems to have a lot more power now. bearing in mind this machine only weighs about 150kg in total ( 3cwt ) and is not fixed down it is remarkably stable and hits real hard, sti...
