here I get the part I want cut from the rest, cut off the worn thin bit at the end and cut off the heel so I have a straight piece that is reasonably parallel about 24" long, 4" wide and 2" thick for about 10 uk pounds ( about 15 $ )

hacksaw, grinder with cutting disc, dremel, really good cutters.
when I had lots to do I got as plate the right thickness and drilled a row of holes in it, filled them with rivets and clamped it to another plate to hold the rivets in place then used a sharp chisel to go along a line of 25 at a time

I would use a press, made a lot of langetting that way in the past out of 16g to 8g stripfrom 3/4" wide in about 36" lengths.
took about 30 seconds to do each as I had to do a short section and move the material along to do the next

will be at tewkes in just over a week, a good event if you can get there, also will be at midfest 2 weeks later with a forge going and hopefully some blacksmiths and even an armourer helping, all reenactors are welcome to come and use the forge. I trade at Torm and ILHF. all the above are worthwhile...

no pix today either, all I done on it is the weigh the anvil, it is now 59kg ( about 130 lbs ).
am quite happy with the weight but will see how it performs and if it needs more later

thank you for the help guys, hope I can add a little to the knowledge base on this in time.
my hammer is a design I came up with from scratch, dont know yet how well it will work and it will be quite small, am aiming for maybe a 30lb hammer maybe less

I found welding on just the underside of the top plate gave it a slight curvature which I think will help tools when bolted down contact the plate better, am not very worried about weld strength, this first prototype has lots of weak points to see what breaks. rebar to top plate welds are done with ...

well I need 2 legs or it is difficult to carry anvils.
