Re: question, hammer / anvil weight?
150kg for yours then which would mean mine may be 75kg. thought about doing mine from heavy box section with a plate on top and lots of rebar inside welded to the top then filled with concrete. dont know if I can work out the weight on that though so may have to guess and see what it comes out at. t...

Re: question, hammer / anvil weight?
seen a thread about these here a while ago, looks good will work it out again, want to keep this down in weight a bit due to cost but also to make it easier for people to collect or have it shipped to them. am aiming for one that is versatile enough for planishing, dishing and forging too without co...

Re: question, hammer / anvil weight?
I can work out the weight from the sizes you have given me thank you. 6" 43.59 Kg per foot =3.6325 Kg per 1" x 32 = 116.2Kg x 2.2 = 255.72 Lbs on your 6" one your hammer is about 22.7Kg so with mine at 10Kg maybe 112 lbs or 50kg or 15Kg maybe 162lbs or 75Kg making a ratio of about 5 to 1. will try a...

question, hammer / anvil weight?
OK am working on a power hammer and am wondering if there is a formula for the relative weights of the top tool / hammer in relation to the bottom tool and heavy block under it. the answer may be as much as possible but I dont want to go too far as it increases costs and makes delivery of these hard...

Re: WARNING. Post- BoTN plate armour freakout. WARNING
as someone who makes tools I am happy that lots of people will want to have a go at making something, some may do well and others may decide it is better to pay the price of going to a good armourer. it all helps sales of tools. have seen a few newbies on here in the last year or so who have done ve...

Re: Helm dishing (Could use some direction)
as you dish you are pulling in some of the metal from the edge, you may need to start again but allow more metal where you are now short and then trim it as needed later. if I dished a square of 1/4 steel it will have 4 pointed corners and 4 curved edges. everyone does it differently so a pattern is...

Re: Help with 24volt 5 port 2 way valve for my powered hamme
depending on the size of the cylinder you are using, if you want it to move at a reasonable speed get as big a valve as you can or it will work in slow motion due to the restricted movement through the valve.
1/8 may be ok for a tiny jewelers desktop hammer, think the valve in ours is at least 1"

Re: Help with 24volt 5 port 2 way valve for my powered hamme
a reed will only switch a small current and the solenoid valve is an inductive load meaning it will take a lot of current so unless you want the reed to only last a few strokes you will need relays and SSR would be the best for it

Re: How do I start collecting authentic pieces of armour?
even reputable places get fooled sometimes into selling fakes but they would probably do something about putting it right. be carefull and ask lots of questions and dont just double check, at least quadruple check everything. I have a possibly original item from a 17c wreck, a 'grenado' but at the p...

Zohar you are doing good, as a denizen of scrapyards here in england I am one of the few who finds odd things and recycles them as tools, also sometimes buying new stuff like 1/3 ton of ball bearings up to 4" diameter. look at the shapes of tools in other threads and search out those shapes in thing...

from springs like that I have seen made eating knives, hook knives for wood carving and lots more. we just cut off 6" with a grinder, get it hot and straighten it, takes only a few mins to do that and then you can work on it to make what you want. I would not use it for making a weapon you were goin...

it may be worthwhile for some simple shapes to get it 75% there and then do the rest by hand though for such things it may be easier to do it all by hand.
I often shape thicker metal on my press, up to 10mm ( 3/8" ) thick but have found thinner stuff harder to get right

a newb should never part with money until they have checked what they want to buy is what they need and that the seller has a very good reputation, and dont just check with one person as that person may be biased.
