Re: Where to buy raising hammers
my first attempt at raising was with 3mm ( at a guess 8 or 10 gauge ) cold rolled steel using a 2lb lump hammer and working it hot.
the second was the same steel with the same hammer cold and I found it easier to get better results cold ( but a little more work )

Re: Where to buy raising hammers
try halberds on here, or make one.
the first thing I raised I used an unmodified builders lump hammer.
I often have some for sale but the shipping would cost too much.
sold a head for one a while ago that weighed in at over 8 pounds

I happen to be left handed and not very tall  ( a bit too tall for the cast of 'Time bandits' though ) seriously though if I had to do a lot of big stainless rivets I would try doing it with my press, that can ...

will probably be mild, could be hot or cold rolled, you would need to scratch the paint to see.
16 gauge would be useful for a lot of things 18 gauge for a few less but still worthwhile for learning and for some parts of armour you can use, dont know the thicknesses required except for on helms.

Re: investing in an anvil
those of us who get to these places can find all sorts of goodies. many years ago I got an 'ironworker' a hydraulic machine for cropping and punching steel, will cut 7" wide plate 3/8" thick or 2" angle or punch 1/2" holes in 1/2" plate. the die holder was missing and the punch holder was in a very ...

Re: investing in an anvil
I have made a few anvils and objects for doing the job of an anvil. one type I regularly make is from the working part of a 'mole plough' or 'subsoiler' this wear part of this not very common type of plough ends up shaped like the horn of an anvil and is hard, I fit a section of fork lift tine for t...

my thought on this are that the rolled edges give strength as well as preventing sharp edges so cutting accross that with a file will weaken it more than shaping it properly

forgework day at my place in febuary now ( England )
am thinking of organising a day of forgework at my place in january, mainly for begginers to have a go and learn a little. new item, or fun with a grinder and lathe
made this today, it has a radius on the small end ( about 30mm or 1 3/16" diameter ) and on the large end ( about 65mm or 2 1/2" diameter ) and a nice curve in between, length is about 152mm or 6".
should be usefull for some parts in making armour I think.

you will not need a lot of skill or tools to improve it and many on here will help. Re: Help me pimp my helve hammer.
like the tire hammer,
is it as simple as it looks with a motor driving the tire and the bolt just below the center of the wheel as the fixing for the con rod onto the crank then a section of leaf spring that rocks and pushes the hammer down and back up

Awp yup
and hot rolled is normally cheaper
here in the UK cold rolled is normal for up to and including 3mm ( 1/8" ) and hot rolled is normal for 3mm upwards but you can get both in other thicknesses if requested

grey / silvery with a pattern like frost on a window = galv flat grey = could be zintec, another but thinner zinc coating, pickle both of these and a reasonable acid will fizz. dark grey / blue-black = hot rolled, hammering it will remove some of the scale, bend it and it will flake off the outside,...

I think the red paint will help a lot
though adding weight to the hammer and anvil may help more as would increasing the speed a bit
