some you can look around but not all and on almost every visit I can find something that is usefull.

lots of steels dont have a lot of carbon
there are many alloy steels with other things in them and there are differences between case hardening and through hardening, for some things you need a hard outer case but a tougher core

drive shafts on FWD cars normally have large ball bearings in the joints, know a motor mechanic you can ask?

1000 grade refers to the tolerance they are made to and is a low grade so may be slightly oval or vary in size but by such a small ammount you will not be able to measure it.
beware of buying balls from overseas, ball bearings are not allowed to be imported into the us

for most things I use 6013 but a little bigger as I make tools and today that included 2 anvils. 1/4" is more the size I use unless I am doing some odd stuff like welding blocks of en 45 spring steel to meehanite in which case it is 7018 hydrogen controlled rods and LOTS of power. for bar grill...
