Re: Anyone in the U.S. willing to take an apprentice?

well I dont know much about armour and am only a beginner at forgework but I have been known to show a newbie a few things and then let them have a go, I am happy to do this as I am probably the main maker of solid fuel forges in England and those who like it will probably buy from me. sometimes I h...

Re: What drill bit

I have 3 pillar drills, one has power feed so as the drill turns it goes down automatically by a pre set amount and I have a choice of speeds from about 2000 rpm down to 40 rpm. my mill / drill goes even slower but is manual feed, all 3 have wet tables and either a bottle for coolant or a pump. the ...

Re: Constructive criticism for a newbie

stick welding takes skill and the thinner the metal the more skill is needed to do a good job. mig is a lot easier on thin stuff gas and tig will require less clean up and may do a better job but will cost more and be slower than mig, if mig is done well it needs little clean up. YMMV depending on w...

Re: What drill bit

low speed and keep the drill bit cool.
make sure it is sharp or it will not cut.
HSS drills are ok, I had to do hundreds of 1/2" holes in 1/2" stainless used 3 drill bits in total and will now resharpen them for next time.

I use a soluble oil for a coolant

Re: How to avoid bad business deals-- any thoughts?

I encourage buyers to collect in person if possible and try things out, some see me at an event and some at my workshop - often they come to buy one thing and end up with a lot more. I tell them to ask others about my stuff. I dont normally take money up front for custom tools and if the customer do...

no probs, we often have them hanging around for a while waiting to be refitted. the big lot we made last year with the oak frames did not have the second iron frame but instead had gudgeon and pintle hinges into the oak and the iron frame fixed to the leaded glass fitted into a recess in the oak. hi...

Re: Stained Glass windows: how were they affixed to stone wa

check for where the fixing wires were, they will be mostly round the edges but some would have been on cross bars I suspect. you should be able to work out where the metal frame was this way. the lead round the edge would not be much wider than that in the rest of it, the edge is a single channel th...
