I love handgonnes and cannon. I portray a Landsknecht on the field. Wheellocks, matchlocks, oh my! I will NEVER condone their use or simulation on the field of combat in the SCA. If you wanna use a gun, I'll say the same thing I say to the Pro-CA faction- GO PLAY PAINTBALL AND STOP LOOKING FOR EASY ...

I don't think I have EVER spent any length of time in any Shire/Barony/etc where there wasn't SOMEONE there to help the "NEW GUY" make armor. Medieval gaunts were for "IN CASE you get hit in the hands".
SCA gaunts are heavy because "you WILL get hit in the hands, repeatedly"

At least that's how *I* always look at it.......

I don't mind bargrills.

I DO mind crappy looking ones.

I've seen folks spend hours making a nice helm, only to ruin the effect by throwing on a half assed bargrill.

I wish more folks used square stock for their grills, it just looks nicer.

Actually, if you know a place that does welding, you can go ask someone there if they'll do it for you.
(Bring "tip" money though, I would!)

Alot of welders will, just so they can say they've done it!
(How often do you get to weld armor, ya know?)

Try it!

You need to put more flare on the skirt lames....so you should start with a slightly curved piece of steel, not a flat strip.
Everything will hang better, and the skirt will flare out like the original.

Keep at it, you've got the basic idea, it just needs more of a "cone" shape to it.
