Both of you guys' starter kits look awesome. A perfect example of what a new guy with some effort to research and make armour with help of more knowledgeable people can do.

Here is my friends Ashcraft Baker flamberge helm that has been modded into an occular style. He is saving up for his maille drape right now. Mods done by the awesome Thomas Willoughby here on the archive. Before: http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/xx277/oni_saken/247779_1806596088612_1351214671_3182...

Re: 2011, Kits...Let's see them!
Finally have a picture of my 2011 kit. Same helmet, which is going to be replaced very soon with a norman nasal with chain covering the grill. Underneath the robe is a linen undertunic, lamelar, stainless elbows with just a regular leather and steel vambrace. On the legs is wax hardened quisses wit...

Re: By My Hand 1 piece hilt Review
Have you had any trouble with the rattan snapping at the hilt? I bought one, but haven't made the sword yet because I was scared it would be weak. Did you do anything to the hilt wood to strengthen the rattan? If you are careful and make sure your stick tapers smoothly with no sudden notches, then ...

EDIT: Or is the entire hilt (crossguard, grip, pommel) one solid piece?
It is a pommel with bars going up to the cross guard. One piece. yes.

By My Hand Designs / Captain Jamie here on the archive, was a pleasure to order from. He was quick to respond to my questions. Re: Modifying a helmet
Sell it and buy something else. That helm is all welded construction. So anything you do would require you cutting into it. AND you would only end up making some kind of bastardized conglomeration of a helm. You are better off selling that and buying new. +1! If it was an ashcraft helm or something...

Re: hidden armor patterns
This is my hidden armour which is made of black HDPE barrel. It is kinda like a coat of plates / lorica segmenta and is VERY protective, yet light and unencumbering. It is basically 2 ribs on each side riveted onto the spinal plate (a long rectangle) and then tied shut in the front. Then there are u...

While I do predominantly use a flattened shield form, I don't always use such. The center grip gives me the option of versatility and is accurate for my kit.

I will bet that your hand pro is touching the inside tip of the boss. That and your wrist pro is probably thicker than a leather demi. I use lacrosse gloves behind my shield and have the same problem. I have just gotten used to the incomplete flattening of my shield against my arm. If I could find a...

Re: New to SCA, looking for second hand items.
I first recommend buying a helm you will like, and whose culture you like. Cause you don't wanna have to buy another helm too soon. For body, I too advise the hidden armour route. It is cheap, protective, and easy to hide under a tunic, surcoat, or kafkan etc. I would make a simple Char Ana style ch...

I have tried the cloth thing in Airsoft games. People lose them all the time and then refuse to buy another $1 shirt to tear up. I guess they like the sticky residue. A cloth torque would look much more nice though IMO.

My first, and so far, only war. Gulfwars 2010. The field battle on Friday. Just the sound of that many shields crashing and being struck was amazing! That and the frantic call of "Balista!" as the namesake came arcing towards the unit I was in. Seeing it strike and knock down a man in full...

You could always pull the grill off and get someone (that may be you, I dunno) to mod that sucker! First of all: Gargle flargle! You sure that is your first build ever?! Secondly, though the pic below shows cord for the chinstrap, I now have a military style riveted in. I used the top hole from the cord setup to do this. It is about where my ear hole is located. It works perfectly. Just my 2 cent...
