Re: an all leather kit ?

Remember, if you are wanting a historical kit, you will have to cover most, if not all of your leather as it was rarely used as standalone armour, regardless of what fantasy writers and artist tell us (except for some Mongolian lamellar and a few other exceptions such as linno thorax and cuir boilli...

I have never bought from him, but Armstreet does some really nice looking women's outfits that would fit with what you describe.

Well, a ashcraft will be waaaay too big for her. I know otto used to make small helms. Maybe Hjalmr or a local guy could maker her one? If she has parents who don't mind poppin the money, and wants maille that wont weigh too much, some ringmesh or atlanta armoury maille is just the ticket.

I am glad you got some armour so you can start fighting! And it is cool how you actually tried to disguise it, unlike alot of other new fighters. Now for the obligatory archive blurb....If ye can get a well tailored surcoat to pop over the armour, it will be a pretty good start on a late 13th, early...

Mine is a simple "C" shaped piece of HDPE black plastic tall enough to cover from the top of my adams apple to about 1/2 inch below. It simply buckles around my neck with hanging tabs that protect the join of the lower throat region. I also have some padding in there. http://i763.photobuck...

Re: Near Museum Quality WMA/SCA Crossover Armor

First, pick a period. COTT, 15th c. and early 16th c. are pretty different. Second decide how much you want to carry in weight. If weight matters, I would think that you would be avoiding the 'mail over plate' of the early/mid 14th c. (yes, late 14th c. too, but you can make a good look there with ...

Two best places to get cheap, affordable riveted maille:
Finditarmoury.com
Kultofathena.com

I do believe those are Andy Ward gauntlets. In order to make them fit better, you or someone with metal skills will have to trim down the overly long hand to thumb section. Then curve it downward a bit too. :(

Re: New guy looking for a full set of armour

Munitions armor in the later period was not ground/polished much. It came direct from the hammer. Lots of the black-and-white was black in the lowered parts because it was hard to polish, and only polihsed in the raised areas. This gave a striking look for great economy. I cannot reccomend Illusion...

Going belly to belly with the opponent and just standing there throwing wraps. It causes one to loose all ability to use proper footwork, it eliminates your striking options, and makes you vulnerable to other foes in a melee. It also looks silly and is completely a-historical.

I agree with Kel insofar as much upper end fighting uses whippy blows that would be ineffectual with a real blade, even if the opponent were lightly protected or unarmoured. Precise, swift chops, stabs, and non-fancy slashes seem to do more work with a real blade when I do cutting exercises so that ...

And, if it comes down to it, get some bronze colored paint. It shouldn't be noticeable as paint on something so small as lorica hook and loops.
