Kendo Kote for SCA?

I read in this thread that a fellow, Sir Ivar, uses kendo kote with leather reinforcements for SCA fighting: http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=131390 Pic:http://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.1972650402361.2118942.1426066447 He says it works well for him. Has anyo...

Nails for Shield Edging

I am wanting to attempt a wooden shield again, but I do not wish to stitch the rawhide on. I would prefer to nail it, but I cannot find a type of nail that works. They are either too big or do not peen properly. Can anyone offer any suggestions of nail brands or providers that will work?

Re: Need sources: shield durability

All I know is that the plywood shield with rubber edging I made for SCA combat didn't fare too well in its first outing at a tourney. The top cracked, the handle cracked, one of the edges split a bit and one of the clenched nails holding the boss ripped through the wood. And that is using it against...

Re: Bucket plastic for Lamellar?

My lamalar is made of 5 gal. buckets. The plates are 2" x 3 1/2" We scraped the buckets with the side of a knife first, this helps them have a waxed leather look. It is slightly flexable so I was asked to put a layer of padding around the kidney area. Other than that I have not cracked a ...

I had a similar problem, but with the palm of my hand after a tourney. It seems I was gripping my sword waaay too hard. After I let my hand rest for a week and remembered to relax my grip, my hand felt fine.

Hmmm...well I found his channel all of 10 minutes before I posted it so I am sorry about that. :(

And I have no idea what the rules for their combat are. I just thought their kits were really cool and the fighting looked reminiscent of SCA.

Steel Combat Similar to SCA

For those of you who like steel combat, check out this guy's channel. The stances and such remind me very much of SCA fighting. One might also notice how many of the fighters do not have face protection yet remain safe. There is no thrusting apparently. And the kits and garb! Oh my! ^u^ If, one day,...

Re: Making Chain Maille look right

Find as many pics of Greenshield (Camric) as you can here on the archive. He often does a norman impression, but his kits always look great with his use of maille. From my experience, the main thing is to avoid armour bulk. Maintain as much of the natural silhouette as possible when using maille.

I am actually attempting something similar, but using heavy linen instead of wool. I would NOT advise canvas. Having made two tunics of the stuff, it is not what a fighter wants to be wearing. Ever seen a human spontaneously burst into flame?

When I went to Gulf Wars I wore all my armour (it is hidden) except for my gorget and helm when I went shopping/wandering. Not the most comfortable due to heat and the general iff-iff of wearing stiff plates here-and-there about one's body, but as it is mostly plastic, it didn't weigh a whole lot.

Maile Drape Damaged by Helm?

I am attempting to get a maille drape to go on my Valsgarde 6 helm, but am worried that the rear portion of the helm will damage the maille. In particular, the curving nature of the slats shown here: http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/xx277/oni_saken/DSCF8664.jpg Will this 'punch' holes in the maill...
