Painting Chainmail

Anyone ever painted chainmail using Rustoleum? I want to get some flat riveted mail, and mild is in my price range, but being in Louisiana, it rusts withing 10 minutes (seriously), so I figured I could rust proof it like I did my Valsgarde helm. I think it looks nice, but would it work for mail? (Of...

That is why I haven't put an aventail on my helm yet. I am thinking about getting a 5mm welded mail one though. It would only add 1lb.

I can sympathize with the new guy (i.e. 1 year or less) having bad/hodge-podge armour. There are many things working against them: mainly decisions on the culture to emulate, but also potential lack of resources and finances, etc. But seeing a squire or a knight with horrendous and blatantly miss-ma...

I used one of their "spangen" (more like a steel football helmet) for quite a while and still reserve it for loaner. It is an absolute tank though. And it is easily padded to fit various head sizes. But it does not look like anything historical. However, I have a fried who uses their Flamb...

They have several spangen helms for under a hundred bucks here: http://kultofathena.com/helmets.asp

Of course, the simplest helm to make oneself would have to be this:

It is just the brow band, nasal, and hardened leather plates stitched together.

What tends to annoy me just a little more than glaring in-accuracies, are unlikable protagonists. This is what did in Conrwell's Saxon series for me. The main character is such an egotistical, vile, ignorant, and crude slob of a human that I, quite frankly, wished he had died in the earlier chapters...

Practice Throwing Spear

So I go to Lowes and they have 5ft tall, 1 inch diameter oak and ash dowels for affixing paint rollers to, and I think to myself: "this would make an excellent shaft for a throwing spear!" As I do not have a proper head to affix to it, and I do not want to batter and blunt a proper spear h...
