On a dress sutton hoo that I worked on, they riveted the face plate onto bars to make it stronger. And a few SCA legal sutton hoos have a bar through the eye so they can be big enough. You could also check out Phoenix Steel Armoury. They sell Stainless exclusively.
Andy Ward Metal is another one you could try for cheap stainless gaunts.

Also, I was shown by His Exellency Lord Motan that using shoe goo or sinew to affix tan conveyor belt to the bottom of leather period shoes is a great way to keep grip while wearing accurate footwear. It is more invisible than vibram soles (color) and it grips stupid good.

A buckle or cord going around the back of your thigh would keep them from flaring out so much. :)

Amazing! I guess since most of the cultures using the bone lemellar were using spears as the primary weapons, it worked well enough.

I had the overly long (at least in my case) thumb section of the hand plate chopped off a bit and the thumb piece re-riveted on. After that, just a simple para-cord criss-cross strapping.
