HDPE also makes good components for a coat of plates, if one were so inclined to use plastic over steel for whatever reason. The curve of the barrel fits most people's chest and belly shapes from what I have seen.

Re: Right Leg Forward fighting style
Having only had my right thigh stuck about 4 times per year while using this style, I can say that leg shots are less a worry now. When I used left leg forward, I got an average of 1-2 thigh hit per practice....and I fight against some pretty good fighters.

swete, Is that picture how you fight in sca steel combat? I'm fighting a light armor tourney after a heavy armor tourney and want to go sword and shield. Also what is your shield made of that it doesn't need edging? That is my non-SCA wall decor shield ;) I did round the edges so I could use it for...

Maybe a bling SCA version (maille drape, visors and such) shown side by side with a SCAdian version like the sallet and bascinet you show there. In essence: Bare bones historical vs Higher attempt at historical.
Also, I commend you on your effort to help the new guys!

Re: Right Leg Forward fighting style
I fight with my right leg forward with a centergrip round. It works quite well for me. I find that it denies the thigh shots to the left leg and adds a good deal of range, as others have mentioned. However, though it isn't static, my stance tends to be a bit deeper than those shown by Payn. It is mo...

Re: Riveted mail vs Welded mail ... pros and cons
Welded is more expensive, but doesn't suffer from Maille-moths nearly as much.
Riveted is usually cheaper, but begats holes more frequently (which isn't that often in the first place)
Welded also usually comes only in stainless, whereas riveted comes in demon steel and mild.

Re: What to use to Sew Maille to Boots?
Dental floss is essentially what artificial sinew is -- long strand nylon and wax. Is there a significant difference in strength between the two though? I was thinking of using floss for another leather working purpose (turnshoes and maybe a belt pouch), but I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea...

And that isn't counting shipping. This is a darn good deal, IMO. @Varuhk and Elricxiii: It isn't the helm, it is m...

@Graham
Consider how many literary and pictoral references we have to the Anglo-Saxons wearing maille, but we have only found one shirt of it. It seems to be a relatively common thing to have pics but no surviving pieces....
