Clean it up, pop a brim on it and a horse-tail plume and you have a starter Chinese helm.

That is awesome. The paw print on the nasal doesn't jump out immediately, only after looking at if for a few seconds, made me do a double take. Very nice.

Re: Ringmesh? Would it stop a sword
I fought SCA style combat in my Ringmesh hauberk since 2009 till last weekend when my knight gave me a riveted mild shirt. Ringmesh stands up to SCA fighting very, very well, as far as structural integrity of the shirt goes. I have maybe 10 rings missing total out of my shirt through SCA combat, an...

Re: Wanted: Hjalmr helm
Hmmm...I dunno if anyone ever put grass on their helms....I would think that if you get a very low profile round top bascinet type helm and you covered it in leather to make it look like a saggy cap of leather or maybe a cow hide, like a roman banner/signal holder dude, but cow instead of wolf or li...

Re: 2012...Show us your kits
Well, not really, “silhouette” in this context is a proper shape for a period. This kit is a 19th C breastplate, 16th C shoulders, 13th C tunic and a 14th C helmet. It’s visually nice and clean, but this suit does not have a period silhouette, just thin. You will notice that I never said it was a c...

I am not all that familiar with that area, but you might consider lamellar. And bazubands, from what I understand, are a-ok for a Turk.
Varukh, here on the archive, does some gorgeous work on leather bazubands.

Re: shield boss material, Leather?
You could always put light leather over the top of your boss. Could look cool if you tool it. But I would not use it as a stand alone material. I keep catching heavy blows on my boss...it is stainless and it is getting dented. It sometimes rebounds and smacks my knuckles even. I have had several riv...

Brand new kit, thanks to deployment money. Changes on the way, better matching demis, a new Knotwolf helm, greaves, and covered footwear. Some day down the line, finger gauntlets and sword hardware, fluted brass lamellar for warfighting, more effort into my shield so it will look the part. I am goi...

Re: Matching my Knight's timeframe
Slow down and take your time to make it a quality kit. Showing up at an even with a new look can make melee's fun as people try to figure out who you are. Of course. I learned how to research after wasting a bit of money early on in my SCA career. I am just excited about the idea ...the execution w...

Re: Ditching half gauntlets!
Congrats man! I did the same for a while, but had to sell the gaunts to pay bills. I will hopefully be doing the ditching the demis next month though. Do you use clams or fingers? Also, have you been able to make drop your main weapon and kill with the back up yet? That is the biggest rush....

Btw, I am not trying to blast Swete's efforts at all. I sure hope it doesn't come out that way. His heart is in the right place, and many people agree with his approach. I am simply trying to offer a different viewpoint that will increase everyone's fun AND increase the SCA. Nah, it's cool. :) It i...

Re: Matching my Knight's timeframe
Thanks guys  If I use a round top spangen nasal helm, not only would it match 1180, but it would also be usable for earlier stuff such as Hastings. One of the main things that really started me thinking about the alternate kit was at last weekend's Turfwars in Meridies. There was a Knight w...

Matching my Knight's timeframe
When I became squired to Sir Grimbaldus Bacon, one of the cool things he did was that he assured me that I did not have to change my kit (750-90 Anglo-Swede) to match his (English 1180). That was very awesome of him as I do love my present kit. However, the more I am around him at events and practic...

Re: Prototype Plastic Basket Hilt
That's a variation of the squid hilt that was used a lot in Meridies back in the eighties. Yeah, it's pretty ugly, but it does get 'em on the field, and it can be constructed with inexpensive plastic and rivets. You don't need to weld to make it work. So, yeah, it looks awful, but it will expand, a...

Re: Prototype Plastic Basket Hilt
My 2 cents. It's quick. It's easy. In black it would be as un-obtrusive as most other plastic hilts. It's a baskethilt. Not like we are replacing a piece of period armor with plastic. For most of us the basket hilt is strictly a safety device and has no basis in reality and no matter HOW nice and s...

Re: Plastic Lamellar Questions
Have you considered a basic Char ana (four mirrors) style armour? It is quite simple to make out of barrel and hides very easily. Also quite safe, I assure you. Solid protection, especially if you lace/tape/glue/sandwich between cloth in some padding. It would be a lot cheaper as well. And it could ...
