Jeff, After looking at the thread for a while, there's one thing I noticed about the helmets in the artwork and the frontal view of your old sketch, and I hope it may be helpful to mention it. The jaw line/mandible on your frontal sketch appears to head straight from the chin to the ears, rather tha...

The SCA allows for armour of any time period that falls within the specified eras in the rules. The armour standard is just that: a single standard by which to regulate all shot calibration, since a great many different types of armour which must be taken into account are expected to be used. It is ...

I agree with Patrick, you really do run the risk of losing new fighters by making them wear humiliating armour. They typically won't be able to get a suit together for a little while, and they can't show off the armour to their family or friends without embarassment. Its already a stretch to get peo...

Sorry, but people no more wore sneakers covered in leather than plain sneakers in the middle ages. Okay, well people didn't chop up thrift store sundresses or wear Minnatonka frill-edged moccasins in the middle ages either. So how, exactly, do you define "an attempt" that is acceptable. B...

Well, there are the chainmaille gorgets which were widely depicted in artwork of the time. You could basically take any dog-collar gorget and attach a large loop of maille that would tuck under your breast plate. That's my plan, anyway. Here's a pic of one on Toby Capwell's armour (with him in it). ...

I have already seen the opposite is true as well. New people who just kinda show up and are kinda lumps on the wall. Not really motivated. Richard, Let me ask you another question: what time period would you be aiming for? Personal heraldry changes a bit as time goes by, mainly it seems to be more simplistic in the earlier days (see the Bayeux Tapestry), often with one design dominating a field by itself, as in the case of your latest ...

The other thing that got my spidey-sense tingling was the face. Compare it to Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford (1194) OT - but for the gallery - what overall shape and size would you ascribe to that shield in this effigy. A heater with a central point on top, as opposed to a flat top. Looks like ...

The best advice I can give anybody new to this type of fighting is this: 1. Get into some loaner armour and clock some hours learning how to move, see, breath, hear and fight in armour. Learn what getting hit is like, all over the body. 2. Pick a time and place in history. DO THIS BEFORE YOU SPEND A...

Re: Mafia Era Helm Questions

I'm a bit confused. I always thought that the Mafia began in the 19th century. At least Wikipedia thinks so too. I would have thought Condottieri would be more apropriate for the 14 century? Can you tell a bit about your personna and the research that led you to create a Mafia enforcer (?presumably...

Why don't you just cut the shoelaces? Also, I wouldn't sew the laces to the coat, I'd sew the leather patch to the coat, punch two holes in it, and feed the lace through.

If the bottom " spade" was cut of and just came to a simple point, I think it would look less cluttered and great! I agree with this. I'd trim off the bottom spade, trim down the top spade and then take a couple files to it. Also, one thing that kind of stood out when I first looked at th...

The human skull as an historical heraldic symbol

I know that the human skull was depicted in funerary heraldry in Middle Ages Europe. I was wondering if it was used much, if ever, as a charge within the normal scope of heraldry. For some reason, I'm having difficulty finding examples of either uses. If anyone happens to have an example, I would be...

The key is to log some serious helmet time, regardless of its type. You have to get used to the changes in vision, breathing, hearing and movement that come with wearing one. As for bargrille vs. closed-face, you'll probably find it easier to fight in a bargrille. Wearing a helm takes getting used t...
