Re: Earliest Cast Iron Pots?
Exactly right Thomas. Thats why I frankly think positing 1600 as a safe date is wisest. Maybe a decade earlier but I wouldnt go too far back into the 1500s. Surely there is reason to think cast iron existed....as to how widely it was done and for what applications is not easy to tell at this point.

Re: Early 15th century "cuff-articulated" Hourglass Gauntlet
Thanks guys. Mac you hit the nail on the head about tubes within tubes quickly reducing space. As it is, its a snug fit. This is just as true with gauntlets and faulds, as it is arming cottes (for which I trimmed up the inside selvage and gained nearly 2 inches) . But, this is a good discussion Ill ...

Re: Earliest Cast Iron Pots?
Yes Im naturally skeptical of pretty much anything I get my hands on to be sure. But I snatched it up in a heartbeat, not wanting to risk it....and I almost lost it had I not upped my price a bit. I showed the antiquities folks (mostly from Europe) who specialized in cast iron many photos and they w...

For kicks, thought you guys might enjoy this. The pic is too large to upload. http://www.younghistory.com/fireback_1626.jpg Late last year I also acquired a cast iron fireback dated to 1626. Its one of the favorites in my collection of early American history. According to the seller, his father ran ...

Re: Earliest Cast Iron Pots?
Ive seen images dating to the latter 1500s which look suspiciously like cast iron cauldrons, but bronze can get pretty dark so period pictures are tricky to be sure. The last posted images is mine. Its around 15 or 16 inches off hand (Ill have to check) possibly late 16th or 17th century. I own anot...

Early 15th century "cuff-articulated" Hourglass Gauntlets
I am racing pretty quickly to finish a harness for my shows this year and Im kicking around the idea of making a pair of circa 1410-1420ish cuff-articulated gauntlets like these: http://s275.photobucket.com/albums/jj296/GutniskaGardet/early%2015th%20century%20gauntlets/ But it occurred to me I wasnt...

100% cotton velvet... how period for late clothing?
I came upon some mid weight 100% cotton velvet curtains (of all things) and the weight seemed ideal for a nice cotte or gown. Not too light, not heavy. Ive been over the basic texts and I know it existed in the 14th century context...but for shoes, hoods etc. Would it?...Could it? be used for a gown...

Re: late 14th aventail cord/wire terminals...mystery?.
I wonder if the cap on the Black Princes was crimped. Someone also suggested that if it was stout brass/bronze wire it might be peined into a countersunk hole in the upper most vervelle. I cant confirm or deny this but its an awful interesting thought. Similar to the countersunk hole for the knot.

late 14th aventail cord/wire terminals...mystery?.
Hi Folks Been a while.... Some aventail questions for the 14th century mafia. Im about to attach a fine aventail to a fine pigface and I like to question what I think I know, particularly now. Up to roughly 1350 or 1360 we see the cords/wires being tied in a knot to hold it in place over the top ver...

Re: peening rivets in a very tight space.
Peining is highly relative. It does not have to be a perfect mushroom to hold tightly. There are tons of examples of really crappy rivets. And examples of great helms in which the upper most rivets are virtually clenched over (like bending a nail over) and smashed down a bit. Remember though that we...

Great stuff Greenshield!
A couple of thoughts. Can you get better lighting in those photos? The are so great but a bit dark.
Also, this is my opinion, consider using make-up to cover the tattoos. They are cool but distract from the overall period essence of the kit.

The problem is that these threads can turn into band-wagon affairs, with people having nothing to do with the transaction, commenting, hence the irony of bumping this:

Re: Original Spangen helm on ebay,,, labeled 5th Cen. Origin
The first thing I see are those BIG rivets. Most spangenhelms have fine (much smaller) and shaped rivets. It does not take much to shape rivets if one knows what they are doing. Second, the uber crude nature of the plate alignment everywhere and suspect. Third, the circlet plate is just huge. Too hi...

FS Miniture 16th century helmet (swanky desk armour porn)
Helmet is a bronze color. Could be plated, not sure and looks like a `6th century bronze parade helmet. Some sort of plaster or resin. We dont know who made it either. Just a very detailed replica that really stands out. About 4 inches tall and hefty. Asking 35. Shipping is negligible, we'll take ca...

Lost army chinese warrior statue. About 20 inches tall I would say, pretty impressive. We saw the Lost Army exhibition when several were brought to the National Geographic society, so I can say there is good detail of armour, shoes, clothing and facial expression, hair, and headgear. Made of a tough...

Re: Question on suppiers of Medieval furniture
For what its worth, we do all period woodworking. No power tools. All hand sawn or riven. Hand planed. Hand forged hardware, hinges, straps etc. Usually white oak is used as its virtually identical to European white oaks.
