IMO two layers of cloth is enough to prevent hits from breaking the skin as well as armor from taking chunks from you. additional padding is not only unnessessary but also hampering.. its very easy to overheat in harness, increasing your insulation via fiber padding for the sake of a SMALL chance of...

english wheels make it thinner as well, although im not sure how much. since your working it cold the metal basically doesnt get to change its compound and move its essentually stretched along the path of the wheel. the reason why english wheels are not used as much as dishing forms is due to wheels...

I think it comes to a more simple term. how often are you going to use the armor, in what conditions, and how much time do you wish to devote afterward to cleaning. stainless is more suited to being in the field in many different areas all the time with little maintenance. BUT is glaringly OOP, this...

adding a wodden raized device to it would make it a lot more "period"esque. The Anglo-Saxon Shield by IP Stephenson is an AWESOME book on early period shields. I learned a crapload of stuff from it. It examines construction, use, repair and decoration of anglo-saxon shieds. Fascinating read. is that in line with the vendal/valsgard timeframe? if so got an ISBN or some scans?
