Some very noticable features on shields from this period and place (Valsgärde) are the abundance of metal hardware on the shield as well as a metal grip and an extremely tough to reproduce mushroomed shaped umbo. If you succeed in those areas, choice of wood becomes a moot point. Stock up in iro...

its light and very durable and takes shaping very well..

its not very popular for furniture due to a green look to it.

this may sound like a joke but..

piss on it...

urine is acidic and has no oxygen in it. ( hence you piss on white posphorus wounds in the Army)

it will put a russet patina on the metal rather well..

just dont tell people .. pisshead isnt a good nick name..

The backing doesn't have to be a black rubber. Consider a trasparent resilient substance; this will minimize the light loss and help with the brightness. I was going to suggest a dollop of white bathtub caulking (silicone or acrylic), for padding, adhesion, and light reflection. COOL! and Ive got a...

Quoth Russ- You can still use a rubber backing, but just sandwich a bit of gold or silver foil between the rubber and the stone. I was just about to suggest that, but I had aluminum foil in mind. Keeping the mounts as low profile as possible is gonna help a lot, and I think that as long as you avoi...
