When I learned great sword, the guy who taught me used to start every practice bout close enough that I could hit him with an elbow. We usually had crossguards touching before one of us said "lay on".
Practice should be about working on weaknesses.

My wife is trying to find an excuse for me to not go (like possibly having a baby that weekend), but barring such events I should be there. Yeah, the contractions sped up last night. Not close enough apart that we have left for the hospital yet, but close enough that I was uncomfortable being an ho...

Baron Eirik came through this morning on his way to Border Raids and bought everything I had in stock (including a couple items that he didn't initially order). I'm still taking custom orders, but nothing is currently ready for immediate shipping.

I have the exact same issue Aaron. Somebody stepped on my shaped, basket-hilted sword, the blade flexed, and the lag bolt in the pommel sheared off. That's why I'm glad I saved the taping fork that came with the Darkwood basket.

I ordered a basket hilt from Darkwood armory and a taping fork came with it. I didn't know what it was at the time, but held onto it. Glad I did because I need it now.

If your shield does a better job protecting your opponent than yourself, it is too big. Legal, but too big. If your shield is big enough that you occasionally can't see your opponent at all, or you can only throw wrap shots, it is way too big. As for bridge battles, remember your allies behind you h...

Wouldn't you need more than one layer if it was half an inch thick?

Ah-hah. You are defaulting to planed rattan sticks having had their impact faces planed flat as well. Other than Master Eirik selling them that way, I don't know where that assumption would come from. The only ones we make with a flattened striking edge on the Types 15 and 12 which have a linear ta...

True story: I'm on my knees at a fighter practice. A shield is jammed in my face. I am holding a hand and a half sword. My opponent raised his sword over his head and said, "Yield." Years later, I still remember the fierce joy I felt when I said, "I'll block it!" (I didn't.) ----...

Re: Laminated Rattan vs Split Rattan polearm
It is a personal preference thing. I would much rather have a weapon that hit hard (or soft) across the entire striking surface than one that hit differently depending on what portion of the polearm happened to land. I can readjust for hard (or soft) easier than "I need to crank it up if he ste...

Wow. That section at the top between the tape and the cabinet doors would certainly hit differently than the sections below it. Is the bit between the solid top portion and the spacer long enough to flex at all?
