Some early experiments were skin-on, but currently the gladii are skin-off in order to have straiter edges.

Re: Mass weapon question

Eidelon, I suggest you read the rules for yourself. Lots of other people read the rules, see "sword" where the rules say "single handed weapon" and see "mace" where the rules say "mass weapon" and then pass along what they remember reading a month (or a year o...

Late period elbow

I have never seen this type of elbow armor before. Can I get some more information?

Re: Clacker Construction

Let me rephrase this a different way:

Is there any rule reason, anywhere, that would prohibit this: a mace with an uncarved 2" piece of rattan for a head. padding on the rattan and half-cylinder 1.5" to 1.5" diameter rattan pieces atop the padding as clackers.

Re: Planed sword edges

I don't think anyone is saying that shaping a sword would decrease its flex. Wouldn't it actually reduce the flex of the rattan overall? I mean starting with a 2" piece and shaving it down would reduce it in some areas not increase it, right? Its rigidity would, however, be more than that of a...

Re: Planed sword edges

Good Baron, is it possible that people are taking your type 15s, and your other pre-shaped rattan blades, and taping them up so that their striking edge is not, in fact, that flat surface, but instead that sharp angle? Possible but highly unlikely. The waster with the sharp linear taper in my first...

Re: Planed sword edges

Before we change the rules can we verify these blades are breaking the existing ones? I don't know anybody with a shaped sword that is a 1 1/4" square. A wider sword, cut into a true diamond cross section, would fail existing rules. We just need to get more gauges out there that can test this.

In an era of armor, I cannot imagine any situation where a thrown knife would be a tactic of choice.

Tackle my opponent and jab a knife in their eyeslot? Yes.
Throw something that is lightweight and only sharp on one end? No.

Re: Thrown Weapons

I believe that during the Crusades the cavalry charge was so effective that even the Persians started adopting it against the crusaders (although they had limited success with that tactic due to a shortage of ash and similar hardwoods). Thrown weapons do not combine well with a couched lance.

I had a broken ankle from a shield bash (another sport). It isn't the shield itself that was the problem. It is the bashing: manipulating somebody else's body in a way it doesn't want to move. The SCA does not allow grappling either.

If your rattan is thick enough to allow it, don't be afraid to take a file to the inside of the crossguard. A perfectly round hole is possibly the worst shape for keeping a crossguard in place.
