When you do get the funds, making a nice axe may be well worth it. I cannot think of a bearded axe without thinking of this picture from Sir Vitus:

One compromise I have played with to increase the longevity is to leave the skin on the striking surface. If you do this, you will not be able to cut a linear taper and will be unable to carve out any small curves that grew in the rattan; but, in theory, it may last longer. These swords haven't been...

My main suggestion is to keep in mind that people hit a lot harder once in a blue moon than they do on average. Build for once in a blue moon. I don't know if this is useful for you, but here is a random idea I had for people that don't want to cut down their whole handle just to slide a crossguard ...

To borrow your analogy, it usually isn't the guys that are 300 ft up the wall that are talking smack about the other guys on the wall ... it is the guy that is only 10 ft up.

Heraldry. It's not just decoration.

People do get mixed up and kills from people who are supposed to be on your side count.

I can see that is the pattern he used.

17 is my own designation for that pattern based on the similarity to the Oakshott type XVII (and to differenciate it from the other patterns which I sell).

I'm trying to start with the thickest rattan possible and that means more variance in the pommel size. These handles are also thicker than the previous batch.

For example, knowledge of the rules and tact are definately good qualities, but what about stubornness? How about a loud voice (when needed)?

I think that neatly sums it up. I love it when I can convice somebody to cheer for me, but I'm also the first to yell "Well done!" when my opponent nails me particularly skillfully.

Yes, I think that marshals doing armor inspection should do their job instead of assuming the fighter knows his part. This should not be a change from what is currently happening. Most fighters do a fine job, know their equipment well and don't really need a marshal's intervention. However, just onc...

I'm beginning to think strait 3" diameter rattan is a myth.

Until the lamination rules change (which is a whole different can of worms), our swords will always be limited by the size of the rattan.

Actually, I think his main frustration was that people were shrugging of shots with foam heads that they would have taken with a noiser "rattan" head. Back to the original question, yes it has been done, and yes they do hit hard. A rattan clacker may be a more elegant solution to his issue.
