By the way, on the photography side, do you guys prefer pictures like the one above with perspective and shadows or something more like this?

A photo highlighting the variations in the hardware that I receive from Stefhan at Hessen Ironworks. While he could certainly make every single piece boringly identical, in today's mass market world I consider these "variations on quality" to be a definite plus. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8156/78...

Part of the skill in photography is standing at the right place at the right time. Imagine if Ursus had tried to take that picture from where AEiric Orvender is standing. From my inexperienced viewpoint, Ursus has all the photography skills.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7814682508_f06326c6a2_z_d.jpg The top waster has a turned tang. The bottom one was hand-carved. The main differences are in uniformity across the length of the tang (and the machine turned tang isn't perfectly strait) and at the joint between tang and blade. This ...

You can't make statements like this and argue with the marshal about bouncing the weapon in the same breath.Caius705 wrote:Truthfully, with the way the mass was concentrated on my mace, I likely would have cracked ribs with it unpadded.

Even if I owned one I wouldn't use it with the other tools I already possess. On a rattan sword, any gross shaping that you could do with a belt sander I could do faster and with less dust using a shaving horse, drawknife and spoke shave. It is not that I can't make round things using my existing to...

Re: No more turned maces
The thick rattan still exists and I'm still hand carving. As a matter of fact, carving out cracks is easier when you are working by hand. Only turned stuff is affected. So, for example, this sword was totally hand carved: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8426/7736019136_57f0d3e0fb_d.jpg But the handles...

Re: No more turned maces
This time, it wasn't a case of a too-long piece of rattan flexing too much. This was a 20" piece of rattan that snapped in two length-wise. The prevalence of cracks in thicker rattan is becoming more and more of an issue as I simultaneously try to push the limits of what can be done with rattan whil...

... at least for a while. I just got the news today. The guys who lathe-turn rattan for me just took a hunk out of one of their $800 bits on a piece of rattan and will not be turning any more rattan for me... ever. I'm heading out there tomorrow to pick up all of the rattan I have there. They have b...

Re: Questions about dagger type.
Caius705, what kingdom are you in? Some kingdoms have specific rules about thrusts to the head.
While in general I agree with Varyag, with certain specific exceptions the SCA has one force level: either a blow is good or it is not whether it is a dagger, a sword, or a mace.

Technique wins.
