Advice wanted on casting rattan sword guard
I recently heard somebody comment that they made crossguards with round holes instead of oval because it was easier to find cylindrical objects to use as plugs for the mold. It has been more than twenty years since I did any type of casting, but I seem to remember that sandstone has the right heat p...

Re: Heraldry: Suns vs Stars
Does anybody know exactly what the two confusing fog-bound devices looked like at the battle of Barnet? The only depiction I have ever seen (on a TV show, which automatically makes the accuracy suspect) was a yellow sun in splendor on blue vs per pale blue and red with a yellow star with a white ros...

Re: Like to get some opinions on mail types, please
A more important question would be what do you want to do with it. A heavy drape to add mass to a helm would have different needs than something as light as possible to hide modern hand protection.

In general, it is easier to register a device with two or more things (like a fox head and an orle, or several water bougets) than a single thing alone.

Re: Heraldry: Suns vs Stars
I don't believe there is any evidence that historically Charles d Albret had either suns or stars on his armor. There is neither on his device. Shakespeare also makes no claim linking the families either (which could have gotten some nobles who care about such things in a tizzy). However, knowing ab...

The Lancastrians lost the battle of Barnet in part because they couldnt tell a star with rays from a sun with bursts... Thanks English. I believe that may be what I was thinking of. Heraldry: Suns vs Stars
I seem to remember that this little side comment from Shakespeare's "Henry V" is significant for some reason, but forgot the details. Would somebody enlighten me?RAMBURES: My lord constable, the armour that I saw in your tent to-night, are those stars or suns upon it?
Constable: Stars, my lord.

Re: WTB 3D printing
I really need to slow down and get samples. I've never done 3D printing before and have no idea of the materials involved.
Jerry suggested an interior honeycomb design for strength (which I liked) and a $115 price tag (which I didn't).

On this first one, price is my over-riding concern. I want to hold one in my hands before I say "Yes, this design is perfect."
Once the first one is done, then I can look at other material qualities.

If you know somebody with a 3D printer that can't handle eleven inches, it certainly doesn't have to be that long.

Re: Bascinet - Period?
In my case, I don't have an historic bascinet of interest yet. For the first time in twenty years, I am contemplating giving up on my primary time periods of interest (England 1550 - 1650) and going with something several hundred years earlier, but I know nothing about those times. Look for a lot of...

That is a problem with this hilt also. The historical counterpart is much smaller.
On the plus side, I've realized that it does not require a hammer grip (as I had thought when I was looking at just pictures).

Re: Rethinking "standard" size wasters
I did a bit more research and realized that for many of the styles I sell (the 10, 12, 15) the length is close to the historical counterpart in terms of overall length. The real difference is in the handle, which is longer in the SCA to accommodate gauntlets. SCA gauntlets are commonly an inch and a ...

Rethinking "standard" size wasters
When I first started carving wasters for sale, I created a thread on this forum asking people what size sword they fought with. More than half of the answers were within a few inches of 36" overall length and very little concern over blade vs tang length. Assuming an added inch from pommel and thrus...

Eadrich, do you have a picture of your cobbled sword? I had a similar idea once upon a time, but I didn't want to take a chance because their pictures have nothing in them to give a sense of scale.
