I've done work for someone in the Adrian Empire before... a 12 ga. barrel helm with a perforated steel plate over the eyeslot. If I recall, the prohibition was "no openings greater than 1/2 inch across" ------------------ Otto's Armoury (home of one HIGHLY overworked armourer!) http://www.members.tr...

Leather/aluminum COP
I plan on using aluminum plates instead of steel in a cop I intend to make soon. I want it to be just a tad beyond sturdy. I was thinking maybe 14 gauge... anyone with experience using aluminum for SCA stuff care to comment?

Unfortunately, washing gambesons is one thing I've not read much about... I asked, and Karen drew a blank too. There are many fighters on this board, so I'd assume someone out there must wash their gambesons. I would think it'd wash very similar to a heavy blanket. Being a cotton shell and batting, ...

Seeking Lucien Ro
Lucien... if you are the one who had an order of a couple tunics and an un-lined cloak from my wife, we got it back from the post office with it noted that it sat 30 days without being picked up, so they sent it back. Are you still out there?

Edward, your e-mail link doesn't appear to be happening... I'm trying to check with you on the "free tunic" thing from my dear wife.

Gee, saying bad things about myself on the Archive here seems a little like shooting myself in the foot... but there have been a few times that I'm a month or so late (unusual, but it happens). A question on the subject of heaters... Is it safe to use a kerosene heater in a moderately small shop? (non-ventilated)... Also, an interesting side note... I've found that the ink in my sharpie marker freezes in the colder weather. I have found it helpful to keep it on the electrical space heater ...

Lord knows I've removed my share of rivets over the years... I grind the head down "almost" to the surface, then I drill the center of the now flat rivet head down to just below the surface, then I use a small chisel and one or two light taps pops the already weakened head off the rivet without marr...

Cheap metal punch
Years ago, I picked up a cheap whitney type punch at a flea market and have really only recently started using it. I find it does 16 gauge mild just fine, but struggles with 14 gauge. I therefor don't use it on 14 guage so as not to ruin the tool. Is there a punch for heavier grades of steel? ------...

Barrel Helms
I've made many, many barrel helms over the years... and I'm pretty good at it by now. I'm finishing one up in the shop tomorrow, and as I'm working on it, it occurs to me that barrel helms really aren't much to look at. The one I'm doing is well made, the seams match well, all phases of construction...

Well, my experience with rolling is, though somewhat limited, it's been quite successful. I flair about 1/2 inch of the edge in the direction I wish to roll it to about a 90 degree angle. I then take the piece off whatever I was using as an edge for the flairing and just continue tapping the edge ov...

I always try to remember to wear a dust mask when doing sanding... seems to do the job well... but, does anyone know just how long the dust hangs in the air? Side question... anyone know how many times a dust mask is re-usable before you need a new one? I don't see that mentioned anywhere on the pac...

SCA secondary metal thickness
For SCA usage... what opinions on 18 guage stainless... thick enough for arms, gorgets, spaulders. I think it would be, but can't recall ever having used it in the past, so thought I'd check. ------------------ Otto's Armoury (home of one HIGHLY overworked armourer!) http://www.members.tripod.com/SB...
