Shield Boss

OK, I remember that I want to use approx. a 9 inch disc to construct a shield boss... and I want about a 1 inch flange on it... but... how deep is a "normal" shield boss? I've seen very shallow ones to ones that must be six inches deep that almost must have been 2 pieces welded.

I use either household or sewing machine oil... and I put a drop or two on the blade... cut about a foot worth of cutting (depending on the material being cut) and then put another drop or two, give the blade 30 sec. or so to cool and cut some more.

My experience with this kind of thing never seems to mirror that of others... I have had the best luck on stainless with plain old black and decker "bullet" bits (the ones made for steel, of course). I just run it slow or use the press, make sure to oil the bit, and it works fine... I don't burn the...

Sinric's Greathelm Pattern

I thought I'd try Sinric's Greathelm pattern... and I notice that the pattern is drawn on graph paper. Are the big squares supposed to be 1 inch per square? When I printed the pattern, the squares come out to 3/4 inch...and the pattern does look like it might be a bit small... do I need to up the pa...

Wouldn't a round top "pembridge" type helm work for that period... or perhaps a sugarloaf greathelm? Both period styles, both eyeslot type helms and I think both fall into the period you're looking at.

Coppergate helm/riveting

I feel like doing a replica of the coppergate helm this summer, as time permits. The question I have is this... the helm is rivetted as one can tell from the holes in the missing parts edges. Also, from looking at the parts of the helm which are still complete, one can tell the rivet heads were file...

Years ago, I wore a heavy maille vest in combat. Several times it made one of my knees give out due to the extra weight and a prior skiing accident. Funny, when a knee gives out... it's not a slow, agonizing fall. You just drop like a puppet with the strings cut... then enjoy the pain. But, gotta ad...

Norse and Norman helms

I'm planning on expanding my line of helms by 3 or 4 styles over the next couple few months... so as not to stray too far from my current strengths, I'm looking to add a norse and a norman spangenhelm to my lists. What I'm looking for is a website to look at to get some ideas, style-wise. I have no ...

Guillaume2... if you're only doing "one time" type armour for yourself, just use the stump... but, if you are going to continue doing armour, a good dishing form (or set of them) is a definite "must" on your list. With a dishing form, shaping is quicker and more uniform. And, the oxy tanks offered b...

Oxy tank bottoms/dishing form

I got my medium and large oxy tank/dishing forms from POD a couple of weeks ago... This might just open up a whole new area of fun for me. Just for chuckles I hammered a helm dome panel that normally takes me about 40-50 minutes to shape and planish. In less than 5 minutes, I had a dome panel that I...

The whole point is not that the SCA is advocating use of carpet armour. This is only something that a newbie could use to try the sport out at practice... not advice on how to make a long term kit.

I know that if I had to purchase a full multi-hundred dollar kit just to TRY the sport, I'd skip it.

Now that I think of it, I have another question under "care and feeding". Could one hand wash such a plated garment and lay it out to dry on a sunny day?
