Sewing plates on a padded garment?

I'm contemplating a body armour type thing (most likely more fantasy than historical)...not fantasy because I saw it somewhere... but because I've never really seen anything historical just like it. Anywho... the problem at hand. I would intend to attach overlapping aluminum plates to the outside of...

I'm pretty sure my hands have toughened some over the years... but I almost always wear leather gloves, the kind with a soft leather "hand" and a tough canvas cuff (long cuff if I can find them)

My 2 bits... in my area, when I started out (about 18 years ago give or take) a clean shot with at least moderate force was considered good. I didn't see the force issue much back then. We always figured that if you didn't mangage to block it at all, you deserved to lose.

Ahh... the old days.

They're a little on the large side... bar length is 9 inches. You can just fit hockey gloves in (while installed on a sword) but it's a snug fit.

Actually, the biggest issue for me is not my age or condition. It's really the monetary value of a full kit when I need the money elsewhere. Later this year, I will either fence or fight. Just can't afford it now.

Still have some blunts at $1.00 each and a couple basket hilts at $25 each.

Thanks, very neighborly of you Aaron... No real issues really... I have big $$$ car repairs to deal with, so can't see keeping hundreds of dollars worth of toys when real life is demanding attention. Also, at 38yrs and out of shape, I begin to wonder if I'd ever get back on the field anyway... SCA f...

which leaves

A few fighter bits for sale

Due to circumstances, I won't be doing the SCA heavy fighting thing in the forseeable future. This leaves me with a few items to sell off (need the money) 1. dished aluminum shield blank, measures 27 inches across the face, probably about 3 inches deep or so, spun metal, very thick and solid. $40 (t...

SCA mudrealm gorget specs...

I was thinking that for my heavy fighting gorget, that I'd rather use a padded collar. (cotton shell, couple layers of batting, made in a yoke/collar setup) Seems like it might be more comfortable and make armour upkeep easier... but is it midrealm legal? I never really did like the feel of blue foa...

Careful use of the grinder (perhaps doing part of the job, allow a cooling period and make another pass until done) will remove the offending nut and bolt WITHOUT ruining your shield. Then replace the missing bolt with a fresh one. Your mishap needn't ruin your shield. Don't do it while you're still...

I like the idea of the pteruges attached directly to the armour padding garment... 2 questions..
1. What was commonly worn over this for body armour?
2. Could this be stretched into celtic britain (around 6th cent.)? Or would that be just totally inappropriate?

Garment leather is pretty light weight... but if you line the edges of the metal so as to avoid direct contact it might last a little longer.

Of course it'd work... with some fussing, you might even get it to look right. Though the leather might be a little light weight and not last too long.

Was this a leather work apron? If so, for what kind of work, and how much was charged? I might consider such a thing to use in my workshop... I've been through a few cotton ones over the years. Leather might hold up better.
