Nomad, I've never been able to imagine a way to make slats invulnerable. I do curve them a bit to give them extra rigidity, but by their very nature, it's a narrow strip of metal and subject to bending, especially at the tips.
Personally, I'd prefer a full normal backplate on any helm.
