Basically I think this is just a hot-button issue for me, or at least it has become one. For years I've just continued to smile and nod when people used language about how superior fighters were who used smaller shields. The unspoken (and sometimes spoken) other half of that is anyone not using a s...

Yeah if you value the use of your fingers I would encourage having gaunts that ground out or at least are extremely well padded.

It's not a rule but it's a damned good idea.

Re: Rough Draft Crown Tournament Shield Law

Greetings Fellow Archivists I am considering enacting a shield size law for Crown Tournaments only, should I win Western Crown (something I do not assume I will be able to do but it behooves me to plan ahead). I invite your civil discussion and I promise I will give all views detailed consideration...

Here is the new one we just completed for my father. Same build only it was a slightly larger tire and rim that the post went all the way through so there was no need for a bolt system. The base is filled with 60lbs of concrete so total the base weighs around 100lbs. Tip: when wrapping carpet around...

m Normally I sink my pel into the ground a few feet but since I moved a few months ago I decided to try a mobile pel. I took a 4x4 a little less than 6 feet long and bolted it through a 5lb weight, a tire inflated still on rim and then poured concrete on top. I then wrapped it in several layers of c...

In a game where everyone loses fights with such frequency it is easier to not be so focused on winning. Intent on a goal is ok because it is rewarding to accomplish such a task that will bring great happiness and satisfaction though. Determination if not with malice or anger and not overriding honor...

Thanks, Steven Cause it is quite possible that if you hit it full power it might bounce back and knock your teeth o...

I agree whole heartedly with your perspective Kevin. Good post. As a rattan fighter in the SCA I have seen many who do practice our fighting with a serious martial artist mindset and others who treat it like a game where they get to club folks like wild cavemen. Both are correct in their approach ye...

I like to refer to SCA rattan combat as a martial sport. In training yes it is a martial art but our practical application of it is in a sporting sense. From wiki - Martial arts or fighting arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat . Martial arts all have a very si...

Not in my experience. Depends on where you live and the local flavor I guess. I don't hold the size of a man’s shield against them. I feel that no matter what size shield they are fighting with it is up to me to overcome it. Large shields do have drawbacks as well, limiting vision for the user, mo...

If we went strictly to this sort of system there would be no more chivalric examples of giving up the earned advantage to keep the fight on an even keel. This is subjective, of course, but I say good riddance. Why on earth would you disable an opponent to gain an advantage, and then disable yoursel...
