Nah it's not that. Like I said I am all for finding a suitable and more durable material but over the years as we have tested numerous substitutes rattan has still been the ol' standbye. Doing more testing has just made me think of why rattan has been so good to us over the years. My issue is that t...

I wouldn't think that shaving the rattan down does much for its durability either. In any case I am pretty sure that if we wanted to most of us could kill a piece of rattan even faster. Some maybe with a single blow but that is also another fine aspect of rattan. An excessive shot is likely to cause...

Some info about durrability from the Caidan front: From Sir Patrick (posted with permission) I broke one in three months of fighting twice a week. That was the shortest time to brake. The next shortest time was Sir Valeric at six moths of twice a week fighting and one too two nights a week of pell ...

Well Corby, maybe you Atlantians don't hit as hard as you think you do. That's a joke. Seriously though I was also impressed when I got the stick I was using and it seemed as if was going to be a great investment but when it broke at the very first practice I was quite bummed out. I did note that ye...

Good thing it doesn't take but a few moments to kill 20 men in melee then otherwise us tourney folks would be sad in melee. Battlefield awareness is the biggest difference in being a good melee fighter or not. Just like tourney fighting the best way to become a better melee fighter is to fight more ...

As has been said the best training for fighting is fighting. When tired fight some more. I also do a lot of pell work which is for speed, power, endurance and accuracy. When you are tired of that it's time to fight some more. And then fight some more. Maybe some jump rope for cardio and some weights...

It's the poly from the link Patrick posted. I agree it looks like B. Amos had material that lasted a bit longer but still only 137 whacks and it broke. That is a bummer. I throw 200 plus shots in my warm up pell drills. No I am not striking a steel I-beam but still.... Hitting a steel helmet is goin...

If he ordered it at the same link then yes. It certainly looks the same but I cannot confirm for certain. I've not used the siloflex stuff so I don't know how that gets chewed up. I agree that it could be cleaned up but with tape and such it sounds like a pain in the ass. It was a concern that was b...

Ok seems like some folks missed it. I bought a stick from this link which is the one Patrick listed. m I took my stick out to practice last night for the first time and it only made it through about 15 fights. The weight wasn't an issue and I didn't notice the vibration much but a good flatsnap to t...

My shield takes too much abuse for me to put too much effort into it like canvas and overlays etc. though I do like the look of those shields for sure. Mine is just aluminum and spray paint with some freehand black outlines to make it pop visually. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/johno1count...

What I was gleaning from his post was more that we should have some sort of rule that prevents rhinoing and to an extent we do. According to the rules a rhino cannot exist. It is up to the receiver to determine if a blow is good or not and if he decides nobody can hit him hard enough then it is his...

We can't re write the rules because in order to do so we would have to remove the honor system. The honor system is the beauty of our game. Without the ugly side of that we would have no way to judge and be inspired by the pretty side. Wow! This is actually a critical point. If we had, say, electro...

I understand the number scale thing yes but barring that how can it be considered excessive if the shot you throw is shrugged off like it's nothing? What if the guy just says good and takes the blow and is happy that you struck them with an 11 on your scale? Is that still excessive? maybe your 11 is...

Rhinos can be Jerks. Rhinos can also be decent folks who just have various problems either mental or armor wise that they just need to fix. You can hit a fighter harder if it will get them to take it and it doesn't feel excessive to you. That works sometimes and can force you to improve your offensi...

Re: Heavy Combat Questions
I was wondering if anyone could answer these questions. In medieval period, if a person were to make armor what would the gauge of the metal be? Assuming that they would be getting attacked with pole hammers/halberds, maces, etcetera... I would think that they would make the armor thicker. I think ...

well I still want to get down south and check out the material HRH Sir Patrick O'Malley is using.
