Well you don't thrust with both hands using a spear. One hand guides the pole and the other does the actual thrusting much like billiards. I think there is also a little bit of a clarity issue with this discussion. I think some people are making reference to a small round center grip type buckler w...

but as for the Rules for SCA combat they are based on chivalry and safety. so be it. i think you give the combat regs more credit than they are due. I am merely stating that it is the basis of their existance. I have never stated that they are perfect at the task. I would say that in light of safet...

Re: When jumping from a tree to shield bash your opponent...
and Duke John Bearkiller florentine two hand thrusts you with his spear back to Drachenwald, did you have any less fun in your re-creation or recreation? I've noticed a lot lately an unfortunate tone that seems to be the SCA doesn't let us do this or that and that's no fun, or isn't historically ac...

Yes a spear thrust CAN be as bad but because the wrist will bend the force gets reduced the same can not be said for shovel handles or punch bucklers. So yes they are inherently less safe then a weapon in which the wrist is allowed to bend. Hence one of the reasons they were banned. This got me thi...

Shield bashing would not add to either one of the basic principles that our rules are based upon. When you can explain how that sucks we might listen. Using your shield as a weapon is a valid medieval technique. It was used by knights (look at the poetry of Chretien) and in trials by combat (Talhof...

It's fine to question things Sean but to question rules that are not causing an issue seems a waste of time that could be spent trying to improve other things like safety and chivalry. Shield bashing would not add to either one of those basic principles that our rules are based upon. If you want to ...

Really? Turning a shield bashing question thread into a CA debate? Geez I just mentioned it to prove a point but said it was another discussion. Start a new thread and we can debate CA until the sun burns out. Actually Johno you did use it. I merely said you want to remove things, you were the one ...

Really? I think most of the CA rules suck. They need to be fixed but that's a different conversation. I think the issue is that I am usually one of the people that says something needs to be removed. It's my lack of wanting to incorporate more into the fighting that seems to set people off. It's no...

What a read on a Monday! I missed armored fencing practice on Sunday, but I probably would have wrecked the SCA some more by using my shield to move someone's basket or something anyway.... That's a stupid statement Leo. There is nothing wrong with doing that. Shield to weapon and shield to shield ...

How would having some 300lb monster smashing your face with the edge of his 10lb shield in melee improve the sport for you? As brutal as it sometimes seems to be it's still a gentlemans sport. Seeing as how he's already doing it and at a full charge while he tries to break through my line I don't s...

Yeah get a haircut ya hippie! Or tuck in your shirt. I used to wear a high collared shirt and I would put my hair back in a pony tail, tuck it in the shirt, flip the collar up and button it. I also wore a backwards baseball cap to keep the rest of my hair in check. Then I started to lose my hair so ...

Wait a second. If a person was around to see the testing phase of a huge variety of different attemps to use a weapon safely as well as seeing numerous injuries from certain items how is it in any way blind faith to explain it as a witness? That is not correct. Sorry. Aside from this it is not faith...

So as not to put words in your mouth. Would you consider this a fair re-wording of your initial statement? So if you aren't allowed to do it remember, within the context of the SCA it was tried already and within the limited set of participants, equipment available, techniques employed and state of...

Well I don't remember them so it must be safe now blah. You're right Leo we all banded together and conspired to make rules that would both...

Because the safety wasn't the problem. They still allow waterbearing, they still promote it. They just removed themselves from liability. The SAFETY is no different after the ruling. The ONLY difference is in legal issues. Which legal issue was it? The SCA being responsible for illness? Yeah that's...

While it is illeagal to smash your opponent in the body with your shield it is legal to smash sheild to sheild. Also, while my opponent cannot hit me in the body with his shield, I do not believe there is any rule against me hitting him in the sheild with my body. At one point I was given 'a talkin...

That is my understanding as well. It isn't about safety, it is about lawsuits. It isn't any more dangerous for a 16 or 17 year old, but the chances of lawsuits are greater. Same with the waterbearing- If it were a safety issue, then they'd disallow it- but they didn't. Instead, they chose to make i...

Instead of writing this drivel you could have answered the question which is what I asked for. I understood why since I watched many people use them extremely effectively. It's pretty ugly in a violent sort of way. Am I understanding you correctly, punch bucklers were banned because they were to effective? As in safe, but too easy to win with? Too effective at it's purpose as a weapon. Peopl...

Child abuse and civil lawsuits. Alot of states in the East have rules that could see people losing their houses over a bruise caused in a fight between an adult and a minor. Which is why we have division 4 - youth rattan. To even train the Div 4 kids you have to be a certified Division 4 Youth Mars...
