Come on really? What's that about? Yeah I am plenty controlled and I hit hard but not beyond what is needed. Sometimes though somebody will zig when they should have zagged and they get hit a little harder than normal. It happens. If it happens when someone is using a thick stick the effect is that ...

Johno, I certainly don't want to continue the name calling, etc but I have read through this entire thread and I am just not following your logic... so please understand that my comments and questions are coming from me scratching my head not me trying to be a prick. I currently own four one handed...

Jono I will take your name off it if you want me to. I really do mean it in jest, I think folks on this board take things too sereously some times. this is a game and it is supposed to be fun. making things appear more historical is fun for me, hurting my friends is not. I assure you that if I am i...

I'm all for realistic looking weapons. I don't think I can post more without being insulting. I'm with you here. You really can't discuss someone who assumes the worst in other people. If I wanted that, I would go to the Political Board. Johno, if you are so certain that by having a shaved rattan s...

Alright I'll take that in stride. HA ha funny Just be careful if you name that sword after me it may well be very powerful and cause mass destruction. I warned ya. Behold! the Johnos! Now to hunt down Leo with it and save the SCA Honestly I can't believe you actually did this. I see the picture and...

Good renown is everything and takes years to achieve. Bad renown is instant and can last forever. You dont get to choose it, others do it for you by watching your actions and listening to your words. You only choose what they are exposed to by you. Johno, Go to practice and fight hard you are carry...

How is it that you feel so comfortable and justified saying things like this? How polite of you. I'm just trying to clear up any misunderstanding as to why people are reacting so negatively towards you. I used to piss people off in much the same way (I think I'm getting better). Several people call...

I have also not been unkind or rude to anyone Yes you have, consistently across many posts. You appear to believe that your opinion is The One True Way, and that anyone who disagrees with you is either: a) acting dangerously, b) acting unchivalrously, and/or c) out to destroy the SCA. We build our ...

Lets table it till Monday PM . I have set up the tensile tester but oddly enough I do not have any rattan on me right now. Who knew I would need it? I will determine the modulus of elasticity of: 1. An unaltered round. 2. A shaped piece made from this same stick. 3. Another, larger shaped piece tha...

The STICK is a tool. Police the person USING it. . OK good point. Why not use laminated wedge shaped swords then huh? Seriously we can control ourselves right so why bother with weapon standards at all? Damned good point Dilan. Because they're not legal? But in the above logic I am asking why not? ...

No Dilan the swords hit harder which is the problem. The more the rules are bent and loopholes are exploited the worse it will get. The intent is to use rattan that is flexible. The point of the rule is not telling you to use a thicker piece of rattan that does not flex so you can shape it down to ...

Knowing that and still using it seems to me a violation of rule # 6 according to the rules of the list. What are you calling rule #6? m VII.A.6. The striking surfaces of all weapons, including the tip, shall be wrapped in a manner that allows no rattan splinters to protrude. VII.B.6. 6. Swords shal...

Waaaaiiit.... You said shaving the rattan made it STIFFER. Now you are changing your tune - well, modifying it at least. So riddle me this - a SHORTER piece of rattan will have less flex than a longer piece the same diameter. So, no short swords, dagger or any weapon below a certain length? Or weig...

All in all I am not trying to call anyone here a cheater. The written rule does seem to lack some definition and leaves it open to interpretation. What I do know is that wedges were banned long ago because of the reasons that have been discussed - More force generated and harder hits. IMO it is a go...

Johno, is it the actual shaping of the sword that that you feel is not right or the fact that larger than 1.25 inch diameter rattan is used? Do you feel that using a round 2.25 diameter stick of rattan would be acceptable within the rules or not? Does shaving 1/2 inch off of each side make it less ...

And I'm saying that if I were using the full, round, 2.25 inch dia. piece of rattan, it would be just as (in)flexible as after I've shaved it to shape. And I'd have to back off on the force at least as much as I do for the finished product. The shaving has not changed the flexibility. Thick rattan ...

Everybody who uses them says thay hit harder. In fact yes they do. Is shaping a stick of rattan not treating them? Height and weight of SCA fighters.
Was just wondering
How tall are you and how much do you weigh?
Edit to add: Age and titles?
What is your primary fighting style? Rattan, CA, Rapier?
I am 5' 11" 218lbs
I fight rattan.
Age 34 KSCA, Count , Viscount

Re: Attempting to use the stuff
I've been studying period techniques and manuals for some time now, and have been for the past half year trying to use this in the SCA for baton combat. Now, I've had some success, and some failure. It has been HARD to stick with it and not fall back on typical SCA techniques when losing some bouts...
