Come on really? What's that about? Yeah I am plenty controlled and I hit hard but not beyond what is needed. Sometimes though somebody will zig when they should have zagged and they get hit a little harder than normal. It happens. If it happens when someone is using a thick stick the effect is that ...

No Dilan the swords hit harder which is the problem. The more the rules are bent and loopholes are exploited the worse it will get. The intent is to use rattan that is flexible. The point of the rule is not telling you to use a thicker piece of rattan that does not flex so you can shape it down to ...

Johno, is it the actual shaping of the sword that that you feel is not right or the fact that larger than 1.25 inch diameter rattan is used? And I'm saying that if I were using the full, round, 2.25 inch dia. piece of rattan, it would be just as (in)flexible as after I've shaved it to shape. And I'd have to back off on the force at least as much as I do for the finished product. The shaving has not changed the flexibility. Thick rattan ...

I believe that if you compare a shaped rattan sword of, say, 2" blade depth against a 2" diameter unshaped stick you won't find any difference in stiffness. But if you compare that shaped 2" stick against a round stick of matching weight, it will be quite a bit stiffer than the unsha...

When you say "bounce chopping" I am guessing that would be throwing combinations with speed using the recoil from a flexible rattan strike that just doesn't exist with steel.

I've been studying period techniques and manuals for some time now, and have been for the past half year trying to use this in the SCA for baton combat. Now, I've had some success, and some failure. It has been HARD to stick with it and not fall back on typical SCA techniques when losing some bouts...
