BTW that's not intended in any way to be an insult but just the way it sounds is also the way it can look.

I too have had moments where tilting my head a few degrees was enough to avoid being struck with adaquate force. :D

Armor is awesome. Honor and integrity is better. One does not cancel out the other. I know that is not what you are implying. I just felt the need to say it. Agreed I'm just saying that I would rather be known for honor and integrity on the field rather than how good I am at deflecting shots with m...

Your skills will improve when you do not depend on your armor to keep you safe or determine the outcome of the fight. Why do you think that thinking that your armor won't protect you makes...

So as an off the wall question, what about when this scenario is reversed? When you move from a lighter hitting kingdom to a heavier one, do you ramp up what you take for a 'good' shot? More specifically, is it seen as a bad thing to not increase the level that you want to take as a good shot? I re...

I don't know that it is dickish, as you said that was the game you were used to playing. I might merely suggest that you look at it in a different way and set yourself on a more skillful type of game. Pretend that your armor would never actually protect you. Throw hard take light. I have heard, "I'm looking forward to denting that suit" to which I reply, "Fine, I'll throw hard enough on your exposed skin to dent this suit...are you OK with that?" They stop commenting then. It only happens rarely, and only in lighter hitting kingdoms, oddly enough. I never...

So, while there is definitely such a thing as too much force when fighting with our friends, and we should absolutely avoid using it in training and sporting bouts, I believe that when fighting in earnest it is not possible to strike with excessive force. That's kind of obvious, though. If you are ...

you're missing one salient point, with regards to metal or rattan. SCA Rattan, weight, 2lbs (for simplicity) Edge, 1inch ish. WMA Steel. Weight 2lbs (for simplicity) Edge... 1/10th of an inch, ish. applying 1/10th of the force of a rattan hit will concentrate the same amount of energy per square in...

It's called precision. For real? You're not really going to imply that rattan fighters are not precise with what they do are you? Can you light matches with the tip of your sword? I can. Well unless you move it faster anyway. A well balanced blade is extremely fast. Can't blame the weapon. A sword is only as fast as you can swing it.

The only part of me participating with rapier that would be outside of the rule set would be the speed at which I feel a sword fight needs in order to be anywhere close to realistic or competitive. There's no speed limit in any of the three subsets of SCA Rapier, just the same as SCA Rattan. Go ahe...

I just think it's a mistake to base your opinion of a martial form on the gut reactions of what you were taught as a kid, or practicing it in a way which is far outside the current ruleset. Particularly when you have an impact on whether or not those arts will be allowed to be put into practice. Ha...
