Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes
I personally want to see striking with great-sword hilts and pomels to be an allowed tactic. I fear that this rule will in the future be used to support a ban on any weapons with 2 thrusting tips for chivalric sport fairness reasons. I see this rule as a step backwards... and that's from someone wh...

Well if you're going to go that route then sir you could address my serious questions I posed to you earlier since the senior marshallate took so long to come up with the new rule... ...since this took a year for the marshals to determine a rule to deal with this very specific issue I am sure they c...

Yeah dude. We call em madus. They work great. LOL
You can even have a buttspike on that spear if it's over 48" according to the new rules LOL

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes
I see the "madu" (for lack of a better word) as a pointy thing used to stab people with. That's all. It's no more visually offensive to me than seeing dudes in samurai gear. Course I was born into the SCA and have no pre-conceived notions about what I am supposed to see out there based on ...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes
Why does a weapon need to have been common? Mankind has never ceased to create weird s#!t to kill each other with and I don't see that trend ending any time soon. Also, since this took a year for the marshals to determine a rule to deal with this very specific issue I am sure they collected a ton of...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes
And the three problems were? The list I received was 1) gauntlets/hockey gloves in faces, 2) basket hilts, 3) cheesy little pommel nubs on daggers/maces/hatchets/ "killing" people which never would happen in reality. Banning madus was apparently never a goal. And so how did the new rule e...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes
At which point someone tries to rule lawyer by calling it something else.... "It's not a madu, it's a 13th century Burgundian combat engineer's combat prybar!" . Which is why making rules that are complex and don't solve problems is just that much more silly. Seriously, basket hilts to th...

Dude I'd rather he just come out and ban (short) madus directly. This is just silly and doesn't fix anything that I can see.
Just more convoluted rules that seem to serve no real purpose.

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes
I merely suggested a simple and more clearly written rule that would keep thrusting tips a safe distance from basket hilts (actually solving the problem) if that indeed was an issue. It wouldn't prohibit him from using his weapon at all. It would only prevent the addition of a buttspike to an oddly ...

Re: I want to learn more about Polypropylene swords!
Sorry, I was not saying all of them were brittle. I was saying that some of the plastics are brittle while others (like what Corby has) obviously aren't.
The problem is being unable to visually tell the difference between the two.

Re: I want to learn more about Polypropylene swords!
So what I got (that you said was the right stuff when I asked) that SHATTERED the first time I used it wasn't more brittle than say the stick Corby has been using for years? Thats odd. And it would be cheating if the marshal... ahem the Society earl marshal... tells you that what you have is correct...

multiple layers yes. Problem was it shattered. Fragmented not just a clean break. Now I do understand that what I got was apparently bad material but there was no way for me to know the when I got it or for any marshal to know it when inspecting it. Re: I want to learn more about Polypropylene swords!
Right, my question is how would you catch this stuff before a more brittle material is used accidentally and shatters on impact sending pointy bits of jagged plastic into a fighters eye? What has been noted several times so far is that you can inspect this stuff even being familiar with the right ma...

Re: Rule Changes
And so that particular weapon, which is not the norm anyway, would be prohibited from having a buttspike with the basket type rule I proposed.
I am sure you could live with that having chosen an odd method of construction for a greatsword anyway.

I provided pictorial evidence of my experience with these plastic sticks. That is all the support I need to have an opinion on the matter. I've seen rattan break and yes I have seen some larger chunks fly a good distance but I have NEVER seen rattan shatter in the manner that these plastics can. Th...

They work very well. Just cut em to length. It was easy peasy. To keep them from deforming I heated them from the inside of the helm with a torch before hammering them open flat and like any of them be sure to slip a round steel peg into the hole when you mash em down.
