Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?

actually I find the fiberglass spears to be somewhat fragile. It is only because we do not attempt to break them that they break relatively infrequently. How many FG spears have you broken this year Balin? I know I helped to break one (woodgrain spear) by attacking you with the Vitus axe at war prac...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

It did some but the game is still in need of some balance and an agreeable SCA wide safety standard.

We've not used that rule for many years now. It was dumb when it was used and we all recognized that pretty much instantly.

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

Which rule do you mean Sir Diglach? Interkingdom event rules regarding CA target areas have always been subject to change over the years since we have always had "negotiations" between the crowns that determine how to deal with subtle differences between kingdom fighting conventions. We've...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

Normally at Estrella we have used the "head and body" target only which means no magic arrows that kill you when they hit you in the thigh or arm. I do consider that to be a more realistic acceptance of blows from arrows.

Re: Wearing maille without a gambeson...

Wouldn't just a sweatshirt under it stop the irritation? Not period I know but if underneath it would be hidden. Sweatshirts are cheap so cutting off the sleeves or even cutting it across the chest to just a half shirt so it stops the rubbing on your shoulders sounds like the coverage you want with ...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

Bodkins pierce maille and only fell out of military use (along with plate armor) when firearms began to dominate the battlefield. Regardless the attempt should be a fair (and fun) system for all when discussing its application in the SCA. Not just the Knights, the melee fighters or the archers. All....

Ohhhh! Yes lightning bolts would have a bonus effect on plate armor for sure! Unless it had energy resistance of course. Then the poor wizard throwing lightning bolts is in trouble!

Re: Low profile thrusts on 2 handers

I believe Omarad is in the process of compiling the latest revision to rectify this problem. As I understand it these things will be corrected and some older forgotten safety measures left out of the last revised rule books will also be put back into place.

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

No I disagree with special treatment for knights. Knights don't get more hit points. We have a higher offense and defense skill set. We don't need extra hit points or bonus armor. Edt: I suppose it would be cool in the "fun factor" for many if everyone killed by arrows were allowed to res ...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

True enough. A tough and annoying process. A huge investment of time, money and energy on a "what if" as well. Even if someone came up with the perfect equipment it's no guarantee that it would be accepted by both sides of the aisle. As it is enough people are invested in what they already...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

That's still me. Fixing some of the discontent is still a worthy endeavor IMO. Face only is still fine by me but not for some of the archers and I still have issue with some of the ammo used since face only makes some of that ammo more of a liability. I will never think CA is a good thing but some a...

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?

My main concern about some of the reactions that I have seen here is that some seem to feel it's ok to automatically get heated and do some chest pounding about how they would deal with the fellow in question. If it raises that sort of ire here on an online chat forum I can only imagine what sort of...

Do unto others. Exactly. And if someone INTENTIONALLY breaks someone elses toys on the field, I will INTENTIONALLY ensure thay can't do it anymore. This is of course very different than if it is UNINTENTIONAL, or if I break my own stuff. Oh, and that other thing needs to be fixed, but is an entirel...

Yes agreed. I said clearly that I do hope that people will not intentionally break each other's equipment but I also hope that if it does happen people don't off on a friggin bender and try to sanction someone or get into each other's face about it. That is just as dickish as IMO. That other thing c...

No, tandy rivets are garbage. Only the solid coppers hold up but look like ass. The "solid brass" they sell means they are made of brass but they are hollow and wimpy. Not so good for most armor applications.

How about the obvious reason it's not allowed. Mundane law. Willful damage of private property. Accidents happen, stuff wears out and needs repair / replacing. Deliberately breaking someone's stuff for whatever reason is wrong. Or, Count Johnathan, are we invited into your camp to break your stuff?...

Or take a short break. Much like a heavy schedule of exercise you should give yourself some downtime to recover. While your mind may be pushing in the right direction it is possible that your body has hit a point where it will only do so much. You need to give it some rest and focus on recovery. Aft...

from the Marshal's handbook IV. THE USE OF WEAPONS AND SHIELDS A. Weapons shall be used in accordance with their design. For example, spears may only be used for thrusting, axes for striking along the edge of the blade, etc.. The weapon did have a 4 or so inch striking edge on the side of the tip b...

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?

It is a disposable item that sooner or later will need to be replaced regardless. But many people, me included, view deliberate breakage differently. If I show up at war (which is a time and budget stretch for me) with two spears and they break due to normal use, well that's just the game. If someo...

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?

Maybe it has a lanyard, II. Jo h nathan, would you intentionally step on people combat arrows to break them? That would be hard for me to do since I don't fight when arrows are in play. I expect weapon breakage. Intentional or otherwise I don't care if my weapon breaks. It is a disposable item that...

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?

I find this discussion and especially the assumption that someone breaking weapons is an asshat or a douche to be very silly. We smash our weapons against hard objects all the time. Our weapons are not indestructible and they will wear out and break. I don't think it is illegal exactly but obviously...
