Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Aaron, what are you doing? Why are you doing it? Interesting question. I had not thought of the WHY yet. WHAT: Finding the medical, social, egalitarian and other reasons for limiting combat archery. WHY: Because combat archery could be a great thing, if done safely. If safety is really the concern,...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Wait I think I get what you mean now Russ. A shafted arrow with a tube around it? If so I think we could do away with the shaft inside the tube since it's the tube that messes up the flight characteristics anyway the inner shaft wouldn't do much to help that and still carries the same potential punc...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Sounds reasonable Russ. Perhaps you could show a picture of the suggested construction so we can see exactly what your thinking? I believe that is kind of what I was suggesting with a Baldar style head that could be fitted on a tube instead of a thin shaft but i am not exactly certain if that is wha...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Excellent explanation! I understand your view more now. While the frequency of failure is rare, the severity of the possible injury drives this arguement. As said before, would Nerf arrow or bolts be acceptable? m It looks like this works for LARPs. Now they would hit LIGHT IMO, but any fighter who...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Aaron we are talking about the shaft of the arrow being a safety risk either due to a punch through (failure of the head on impact) while the grill holds the head in place and allows the .25" fiberglass rod to lance your face Example... http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/johno1count/Random...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
One problem with siloflex is that the ammo doesn't want to go where you point it. They have the badminton birdie effect with drag. Also UMMW and rubber stopper ammo both are overly soft for impact recognition, compared to Baldar's blunts which are still soft compared to being hit with rattan. Atlea...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
I think the failure rate of fiberglass arrows should be looked into. I think it's quite rare. But, if the failure rate is of concern, we could switch to aluminum arrows.....-Aaron I am sorry Aaron this post only shows that you clearly don't get it at all. I think at this point it must be an intenti...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
That arguement is the "unsporting" arguement. As long as it looks "unfair" someone will complain. And if the "unsporting" arguement is trumped by the "grow up and fight" arguement, the "unsafe" arguement will rise up, even though the injury rate for...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
I agree that a .25" fiberglass shaft is scary, especially when the only thing holding the blunt head on is the FRICTION between plastic and polished fiberglass LOL (and tape omg). BUT, a .5" plastic rod OR a (.25 fiberglass shaft sanded and glued to a fiberglass lined vinyl sleeve for a t...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
When I did it I was in a position where it was not possible for them to get me. I am a tactition and a melee fighter so of course I took up the most advantageous position to take out my targets with the least risk of me being struck. That's just common sense on a melee field no matter what weapon yo...

LOL not fair. I disagree with lo-pro thrusties too. Glad some people in your kingdom who fire arrows at us are considerate of our concerns. Probably cheaper for them as well. They probably use them because they are effective and they have no problems hitting what they aim at. I shot people with golf...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Sigh... The reason for the contrasting tips is so that they are easy to see- That will do. That was my point. Easy to see, aware of their existence, improves one’s ability to block them when made aware of their presence, improves game balance and is there solely for the sake of fairness of contest....

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Well, that, too - but it isn't to make it easier to avoid. Using Johno's logic, the entire sword should be covered in Day-glo pink so that it is REALLY easy to see. That is so very nitpicky. It's to make your opponent aware of it via visual contrast making it "REALLY easy to see" My logic...

Maeryk is correct. Being able to tell it fell off is just a fortunate by product of having it marked in a contrasting color.

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Regarding "compromise" and rule changes, the only changes to CA rules have been in favor of non-ca fighters. I will agree that most of them were driven by increased safety, but at no time (that I am aware of) have non-ca armor or weapon standards been changed to compromise with ca. I know...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
T&B ammo is not a compromise. It reduces CA to something inferior to even LARP boffer combat archery and that's a sad state of affairs. I was watching a well known LARP arrow making tutorial yesterday and their consensus is: carbon arrow shaft with large metal washer attached to the end, no APD...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Yes when facing arrows on the field (even though I don't like it) all that I ever felt was required was for me to notice the hit to a legal target area. My concerns over CA have primarily been about the safety of the targets and the bystanders not wearing armor. I've never been bothered about the la...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
I'm not sure why people want arows to hit harder anyway. I've never understood that. I don't mind golf tube and Tball ammo. It hits with enough force to notice it which is all that should be required. The other forms of arrows hit substantially harder and it seems odd to me that "they don't hit...

Swords last me maybe 5 hard practices before they are destroyed or are no longer usable because they broom out and people can't feel the blows I deliver with them.

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
Balin, as the general for the Aten army at Estrella had the sharing concept setup in mind. There were zones for archers and zones where they were not so that people could fight against them or not as they chose. I missed that day of battles so I cannot tell you the result but it seemed a fair compro...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
All of our combat is regulated by tournament standards. There is no animosity, no hatred, and no attempt to conquer lands or to extinguish the culture of those we fight. We do not try to change their religions or tax lands that we invade. We do not take their resources or change their system of gove...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
So according to your definition of chivalry someone can act in a knightly and chivalrous manner while shooting an unaware opponent in the back? Is that how you define knightly and chivalrous behavior or do you think that knightly and chivalrous behavior is not a requirement on our fields? OT sidenot...

Re: White Scarves and the East..Is this true?
I don't see a problem doing away with the White Scarf Treaty if TRM's of any Kingdom should wish to do so. Each Kingdom should have its own Grant level Order- if they so choose to. The White Scarf Treaty, regalia, etc, are among the reasons that Rapier has seen such a pushback from the heavy commun...

That's because the subject itself is the same. It always has been and always will be in direct conflict with the basic premise of our combat rules.

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
When our intent is to actually take lands and money from our noble cousins through war we can then use whatever means necessary. When the intent is fun via chivalric contest we do not need such devices of ranged assasins to accomplish that goal. Make up your mind... Do you believe that our Melees a...
