Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

The manner in which you fight and the way you behave during that act are intertwined. One cannot, by anyones definition, act in a knightly and chivalrous manner while shooting an unaware opponent in the back or by utilizing such an extreme range advantage that it is impossible for their opponent to ...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

DUDE! The following rule is supposed to apply to everyone who takes the field in the SCA. 6. Combatants shall behave in a knightly and chivalrous manner , and shall fight according to the appropriate Society and Kingdom Conventions of Combat. WTH does that have to do with how close people are standi...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

Meaning if they require forearm armor for example or a standard more strict than the requirements detailed by the society minimums you must follow the rules of the kingdom you are fighting in. Some kingdoms allow a person to stand closer to a legged opponent than others. That sort of thing. The rule...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

So while the chivalry hated it, they still used it. So what is our guide for approaching it? When our intent is to actually take lands and money from our noble cousins through war we can then use whatever means necessary. When the intent is fun via chivalric contest we do not need such devices of r...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

Chivalry hating archers is period. Why should today be any different than the rest of history? Today should be different because the following rule is suposed to apply to everyone who takes the field in the SCA. 6. Combatants shall behave in a knightly and chivalrous manner , and shall fight accord...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

So Your Excellency, if I understand you correctly, a Bridge Battle for you would be a type of Chivalric Tournament and not a "war action"? Is there ANY type of melee that would qualify as a "war action" and not a large tournament? Just to play Devil's Advocate, what would have h...

Re: #1 Technical Error in SCA Sword & Shield?

I never do that. We train that kind of stuff out of our fighters from the start. It is basic fundamentals of fighting and I rarely see Aten fighters do that. The body mechanics of my fighting style don't even offer much opportunity to lean forward like that so I think it must be a regional thing Cor...

Re: The CUlture of WMA

I was just curious about what you guys do and the atmosphere etc. It has nothing to do with the SCA. I respect that other organizations have very different focus and intentions. I think that is a good thing. Seriously I am not intending to argue about it or judge your group. I just wanted to learn m...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

Just thinking out loud- but were siege weapons part of mass tournament melees? If not, then the inclusion of siege weapons argues strongly for the "recreating a war/battle" scenario- at least in the battles where siege is allowed. Well, sure, but the "it's all tournament" factio...

The CUlture of WMA

I know all about the SCA and what it does. Our rank and structure and the "game" side of our organization where we all follow kings and queens doing their bidding, attending courts etc. People have seen our politics and such enough to choke a moose. It is what it is. It's nothing like what...

Re: "Cut and thrust" in armor at Pennsic?

I've done initial authorizations in the past at Pennsic. I then have advised said fencer that they are not to participate in the war point melees, but everything else was fair game. I go by the rules as they are written. If you want to impose your interpretation, it should not be in conflict with t...

I'm thinking of all the errors people make and there is a huge number of them that are common.

Not breathing also comes to mind.

Re: #1 Technical Error in SCA Sword & Shield?

Table-ing their shield though some do it as a strategic ploy. Hitting flat is equally as common IMO but not specific to just S&S fighting.

Re: Future of SCA fighting

Well from puck anyway.

Perhaps you are unaware of exactly how large the shinai community was at the time. I remember. It was no tiny group.

The reasons it was eliminated are very similar to my lack of appreciation for rapier and C&T. Very similar.

Re: Future of SCA fighting

As someone, maybe one of the only people in the SCA who did ban a particular "martial activity" in the SCA: namely banning organized Shinai or "light weapons" in Caid, I can say that although I felt somewhat badly for doing it and "removing the fun" of a certain segmen...

Re: Future of SCA fighting

What's sad is some people feeling the need to compare my distaste for a sport to racism.

If you feel rapier is what you are I feel bad for you.

Rapier is not a religion or ethnicity. It's an activity. Big difference.

Re: Future of SCA fighting

Comparing two types of sporting events to racism is really going overboard quite a bit. If that is what you feel you need to do in order to make me look like a really really bad guy then I am fine with what I actually said and not in the slightest bit concerned for people who must go to fabricated e...

Re: The future of C&T

That is an interesting point BA. Heavy fighting could not be banned by a crown but the others (rapier, C&T, CA) certainly could be. Perhaps that is one thing people have not considered when thinking about which fighting activities are actually considered "important" in the SCA. We real...

Count Johnathan, please let me see if I've got this straight. According to you, because I've found a pastime (the SCA) which I enjoy. And because I have found other activities that can and have been incorporated into the pastime (rapier and C&T). It would be better for the SCA and me if Rapier ...

Re: The future of C&T

Many groups have already formed separate clubs for Rapier, C&T, etc. We have discussed doing the same thing at the local level, but so far have not had the need. If the SCA were to drop rapier, we'd form another group in a heartbeat. Can you say the same? If the SCA were to drop heavy tomorrow,...

Individual kingdom incorporations and donations by the people who want to make it happen. It would take some time but it could, and I believe it would, happen.

Re: The future of C&T

With the financial situation being what it is, any significant drop in numbers- for any reason- could easily mean the end of the SCA. I truly doubt that. SCA Inc. perhaps but not the game we play. There's just too many of us that would still want to do it to let it just die for any reason. It's all...

I don't know that a ban on it is as far fetched as you seem to think. Not everyone is pleased about it. It's been close to being banned before and very well could be again. To be completely honest not having rapier and C&T would not end the SCA in the slightest. A big drop in membership numbers...

The difference that's playing out here is that some of our members want to retain the more narrowly focused "good ole' days" of the SCA, and some of us want to allow changes from the norm that would broaden the possibilities within the society. Johnathan, the members of the society have t...
