Re: The future of C&T

Based on what I've been reading in several threads, I think that Johnathan would rather have purely rattan combat in the SCA than a multi-discipline fighting contingent if given the choice. That opinion tends to flavor his perspective on issues like this one. Johnathan, I really really think that i...

Re: The future of C&T

...and I wonder, how does advocating new splinter groups solve the real problem of declining numbers? Well obviously it wouldn't but that isn't what I was getting at exactly. I was simply saying that if that is what so many people want why not start a group that focuses on C&T as the main game?...

Re: The future of C&T

Nothing about rattan combat is a recreation of medieval art or skill. While perhaps not practiced as we do it, they did bash each other with clubs for sport as well as every culture that ever used swords used some sort of wooden equivalent for practice at least. Can I start up a splinter group? Of ...

Re: The future of C&T

Perhaps you understand then why I say splinter group. It's not intended as an insult or condemnation of the practice. There are many things about the SCA that I love. There are also many things about it that I don't. It does offer many things that I enjoy. The things it doesn't offer, I seek elsewhe...

I assumed that was what you were getting at Vitus.

I know Basket hilts weren't a common item until mid to late 70s even early 80s in some places.

Re: If you could ask the 'founders'?

That Baycon Tourney occurred at, the 26th World Science Fiction Convention, held in Oakland CA. on September 2, 1968 ( AS III). I had my left hand in a cast strapped to the back of my shield, when I fought then. Tournaments Illuminated Issue Number 9 was published some time after that date in late ...

So a guy in full cap-a-pie would take shots how? Why? Seems problematic to me unless it was a judged contest with blows counting as points determined by a ref.

Re: Onion Top

I suggest some sort of central vertical crossbar on every helm so that the edge of a shield can not penetrate all the way. Helms without a center bar can allow shields to penetrate up to 8 inches or more. It is actually a concern that people should think about. I have seen a fighter without a center...

Re: If you could ask the 'founders'?

As for basket hilts, my hand getting broken was the beginnning. At a private practice session I tried to parry a blow with a split rattan cross guard and missed and got my knuckles smashed. After getting the cast off I made the first basket hilt... Henrik, do you recall what year that was? Thanks.

And Isabella I have to say I consider that the failure of the rapier fighters you were around who weren't so interested in those things and didn't explain it to you as a new member.

Sorry but that is the truth of it and again part of my dissapointment in some of those participants.

Re: Cutting edges on daggers?

I consider daggers primarily as poking weapons. Slashing with one is good against naked flesh but useless against armor so not much reason to bother with that on the heavy field. If it's long enough to cause significant hacking damage I would have to agree with calling it a short sword.

Re: Future of SCA fighting

I don't think it's a problem for people to desire being awarded for their efforts anyway. In an organization filled with rank, structure and awards I expect it to be a bit of a driving force behind some peoples efforts. The awards are there to recognize and encourage people for their participation. ...

Re: Future of SCA fighting

I see it from the perspective of someone who has given awards from 2 different seats (prince & king) as well as one who has selected and removed Barons from their positions. You know, choosing who gets to give "cookies".

I'm anything but award hungry.

Re: Cutting edges on daggers?

Hacking at someone in armor with a dagger is about as useless as you can get however having a distinct "blade" represented on it would let folks know they couldn't grab the "blade" portion of the weapon. Not that they would normally anyway but I see the value in having that clear...

I see where you're coming from on this. I'm not trying to pick apart your words and be a jerk here, but I would like to point out that there are also SCA folk that do the things you don't like and don't rapier fight at all. And there are plenty of Heavies that have poor attitudes(I heavy fight) ......

I suppose you could make the same accusation at LARPers like Dagorhir (sp?) et al. People like what they like, hating them for liking one particular nerdy hobby over another isn't productive. One of the heavy fighters that trained me called rapier fighters "wire weenies." Honestly, I don'...
