mine has a faceplate for two reasons first to protect me from getting his in sca combat while not looking like a bargrill.
and secondly because i have a very non scary and non intimidating look about me.
with the faceplate people will sometimes hesitate just enough.

in this pic you can see where i trimmed the hand plate to facillitate the holding of a weapon.
