ive had a blued mild steel helm for about 3 years now and have never had any problems as of yet.
just make sure to do a basic up keep after use and you should be good.

the chain is attched to a leather strip which fits very closely to the top of the helm removing that layer and replacing would be very difficult. maybe just below but i dont make chain and cost wise it would be easier to just add to what is already there withought tearing down and re building the wh...

really my biggest concern with the rass chain is i usually polish all the brass on m helm before use,
