Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit

Taking a break for lunch, thought I'd throw an update on here. The sabatons are progressing well, I think. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3776/8856074351_5e6c1e17f1.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2882/8856042745_32acd21076.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7366/8856622682_65e26e0afc_z.jpg About to...

Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit

Konstantin , that's not a bad idea at all! I'll have to try that for the steep place in the helmet. My other thought was a long piece of pipe with a rounded end, horizontal to the floor. That lets the bar take the weight of the helmet while I planish, instead of my arm. That or a slim dogleg stake ...

Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit

Hallo, all! I hope y'all are having a great weekend. :) I've got some updates! I've been hammering away in the shop today for about...10 or 11 hours today. A couple items were for the wedding, but I'll post those elsewhere later. First up, I've got a new project I plan to finish up tomorrow. Sabaton...

Re: New Armour suit

Top edge of the sab? Hm...at the top edge of your sabs, does the metal flare out? Or is the piece flatter? It may be digging in simply because the sabatons don't follow the upwdard curve of your ankle enough; alternatively, the top edge of your sabatons may be too high, which could also cause them t...

As influential and pervasive as archery was, I'm surprised at the lack of depictions of bowyers. Was their trade such a closely guarded secret, that no artist even drew what they thought a bowyer at his trade would look like?

Re: New Armour suit

It could, if the greave was not fitted to the leg sufficiently to hang from the calf. Which would cause the weight to rest on the top of the foot. Which can cause this: Something was biting my ankles the last time I wore the armor It would put weight on the instep of your foot, which is by no means ...

............or, the weight of the greaves, by being attached to the demi greave, are then supported by the points on the hips. Or, the weight of the cuisses are partially supported by the well fitted greaves, which hang from the calf.

Re: Is an arming coat padded or just multiple layers?

For one thing, many of the inner layers are just floating, that is, the fabric is not caught in the seam. Imagine you have 7 or 8 layers, you just want 2 or 3 of those in the seam, the rest you trim to the edge of the seam allowance. Really now? So, the rest of the layers are held in place by the q...

Re: Why do so many people choose a 14th century persona?

Personally, because the equipment is awesome, fairly easy to make, works well for SCA combat. I love the styles, there is a ton of documentation for everything, plaque belts are awesome. Then there are things like the 14th century deeds, which I love. And yes, hosen are awesome. Couldn't have said ...

Jonathan, the problem with that idea is that having an official rating system on the Archive opens JT to litigation. Its been discussed before.

Re: Losing a leg

I thought you were allowed to balance yourself upon your good leg, as long as the other did not touch the ground? I've not seen many people do it, simply because of the difficulty involved with balancing on one leg, in armor, while trying to fight someone and block further blows.

Very true, Konstantin; the illustration was a bit of an extrapolation. I like to make things that are similar, but not exact copies. I feel that it gives the medievalist community a bit more visual variety. And I know that for me, personally, it requires a deeper understanding of the period and the ...

Those are reinforces, and they're precisely for jousting. All of this is designed to protect the side of t...

Perhaps it reduced the bulk along the inside of the greaves, to provide a lower profile that wouldn't catch together when walking. Or, the leather strap along the inside provided a bit of a 'garter' effect on the hosen, helping the greave stay in place. Or, less of a target that could be cut when on...
