Re: SCA rapier Vs. sports fencing vs. historical fencing
I would say, why stop with one form? I trained in foil, epee, and sabre while I was sport fencing. Foil taught me good parries and footwork, epee taught me targeting and timing, and sabre taught me speed and aggression. When the sabreists started complaining that I hit hard...I knew I was doing thin...

Ah, this is a hard solder technique, and not a soft solder. Hard solder melts at higher temperatures, and requires a torch, much like brazing.

my idea was to take a build the different layers as the petals and leaves from a solid square up to the finished product. Im not sure what you are talking about with sweat soldering could you exlpain. Sweat soldering is used to join two flat pieces of metal together. It solders the entire surface b...

Re: Plaque belt brain storming
what about building up multiple layers of brass. and riveting them together? I think it would be conceivable to create something like the maurice berkley Effigy and could look really nice. And if you flush riveted and sweat soldered the layers together, you likely couldn't tell the difference betwe...

Re: Plaque belt brain storming
I'm not so sure of that, Buster. I can do some really cool repousse in sheet brass. When you start looking at people like Ugo, doing intricate shapes is child's play. Now, it would be faster to cast, certainly. But for those without a crucible and forge, I think that working up the plaques out of sh...

Re: SCA rapier Vs. sports fencing vs. historical fencing
Quite right, BA. But if you move your sword arm in front of your torso by turning to present a narrower target, it does work to effectively diminish the target zone. Mayhap that was what Nathaniel was referencing.

How do you ignore someone that wants to volunteer? Don't get that one. An established group of people they're used to interacting with, who "know how we do things around here". That way, they don't have to take the time to instruct the well-meaning newcomer. It doesn't happen everywhere, ...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
As I mentioned before, I have seen interested people come up at events open to the public as well as public practices and be completely rebuffed. It is not an exaggeration to say that many SCAdians have very poorly developed social skills and don't interact with strangers well. Sure If you've known...

I partially disagree with you there, if they have a shield, and are aware of you, It's going to be near impossible for you to shoot him at that point. You'd be better off if you were able to switch over to a sword and buckler (Which is what I intend to carry with me) and fight them up close. Yup. N...

I honestly think that doing so would not bring enough people in to balance out the diminishing numbers caused by easier hobbies and the ec...

SH: what's so horrible about having CA as its own activity? Then you guys can do whatever you want to and not have to worry about whether the heavy community likes what you do or not, just like the fencing community and the A&S community. I thought the SCA already had an avenue for that...its c...

There are other types of foam to use, and those who use them will likely chime in, but I just wanna advocate the period solution. Linen liner. Its cool and wicks sweat. You can stuff it with linen tow, wool, even horsehair. Several people have advocated bamboo batting, which is more breathable than ...

Re: Arming Coat Construction - Troubleshooting Help?
Absolutely, Oskar, but you may not like it. The period solution (for a CdB) was to make the upper arm in one section and the elbow and lower arm in a different section, and attach them together in a pre-bent configuration of about 120 degrees (or, 60 degrees from horizontal). That way, when you bent...

If the group was stagnant, though, what could they do that would've attracted you to the SCA and away from more immediate accomplishments (fencing tournaments, etc)? I'd posit that it was the stagnation that kept me from joining, and moved me towards the fencing and such. Which is the issue, isn't ...

Dang! That's some harsh fighting. If it was me I'd have helped the guy that fell. Or is that not a good thing. Is there a point where someone would say it isn't safe to fight in those conditions? I mean for what we do since we aren't really trying to hurt the other guy. The way the guy on brown fel...

more college focused groups. recruit 'em before their life patterns are set. This. I had a hunger for a group I could hit in college, and it was non-existant. I went to a boffer group, because it was there. When that group dissolved, I went on to join, and eventually lead, the college fencing team....

While I can understand wanting to level the fighter who has been harassing you, there is something very dirty to me in removing one's ability to yield.
All fighters on the field can yield, and that should not be changed.

Sorry spearmen, you're still kind of an easy target. That's realistically the tradeoff for fighting spear, anyway. Higher offence, reduced defense. LOL so how does that figure with CA on the field they get more offense and can fight from outside any melee weapons return fire. Oh and they shoot peop...

Re: Fire blackening forged mild steel stakes, S-hooks, etc.
Its a typical way to blacken, and yields a good finish. Another way is to heat the piece to a black heat, and rub beeswax over the pieces. You'll have a darker finish with the motor-oil, but both work reasonably well.

It certainly would. I assume you're talking linen? If you're really concerned, you could bump up to 7.1oz, but that would be unnecessary for all except the most abused of tabards and fabric-covered breastplates, IMO.
