Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Mentally, I'm having trouble seeing the difficulty...perhaps because my mind is thinking arming cotte instead of a doublet. From out to in...? Cuirass || mail skirt (friction belted just below natural waist) || legs (pointed at hips) || doublet || brayette (friction belted just above hips) || hosen ...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Huh...the fabric tape makes perfect sense. It would be less likely to stretch out over time like the leather might. Less bulk, too, for comparable strength.

Cool! It's always interesting to see other's homemade tools. On that leather edger, how do you keep the adjustment space consistent?

That looks awesome!
What leather are you using to hold it 'round the waist? Also, I like that you've tied it shut, rather than using a metal buckle.

Re: What does your torch setup look like?
O/A works better for welding and for cutting thick stock, which broadens its usefulness in a general sense. Gives you options for making tools and building frames and stands for tools, at that point. But yeah, for hot work O/P, or even P with an air mixture, is more than enough heat for most armoring.

Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit
Thanks Randall! Not to jinx things, but if I keep this pace up, I should have all the eyelets finished in less than a week. :D Progress tonight: 40% done. At this point, the laces are around my floating ribs. I can just barely blade a hand in there, but it's not constricting...rather, it's just tigh...

My oldest brother is a fireman...and in his free time, professional welder among other things. He practically slaps the back of anyone's head anytime they mention using Harbor Freight torches, tanks or regulators. Take that information however you'd like. Also, welcome to the Archive! Re: 16g hourglass finger gauntlets Ukraine vs India
Hmm. Well, looking at those two... The UK ones have better fitted gloves, which have been secured to the metal cuff. The IN ones have a bulkier glove and the cuff has not been secured. Sloppier gloves can allow your fingers to wallow around and slip out from under the plate edges. The wrist area has...

Re: 16g hourglass finger gauntlets Ukraine vs India
Well, to add to the commentary, the Ukrainian imports are often a better shape than the Indian ones. And when it comes to finger gauntlets, properly fitting your hands is paramount to how good they are at protecting you. Mitten gauntlets can fit sloppily and still work okay...sloppy finger gauntlets...

Nibbling a bit more on this. Now 30% done with the front eyelets. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7626/16151118483_697c5fc56e_z.jpg Fit is very snug (I need to lose a couple inches on my waist), but the range of motion in the shoulders and elbows is flawless. I'm very excited to see this finished.

Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit
A good point, KtR. The entire purpose of this particular collar is to look good, and provide a last ditch defense to my throat. Perhaps I was over thinking the discomfort that having two layers of mail underneath the corrazina might bring. After all, there is an aketon under it all. Speaking of aket...

If you're having trouble getting Google to play nice, you could put the album up on flickr. I've never had any issues with it. Nicer to browse than picasa or photobucket, in my opinion.

That's an exciting looking hook! It has a liveliness in its lines. Are you cutting and filing it out of a scrap of thick sheet, or taking the time to smith it out of a piece of barstock?

Why not take inspiration from the carved motifs of the time period? Lots of curls and intertwined lines that would look incredible in a welded and filed grill.

On the subject of loaner gear. It's more trouble for the marshal or whoever has to transport it, but never actually loan out the gear. Bring it to practice, let them use it and then return it at the end of the day. Don't let them take it home. Yup. I also like "branding" the gear with LOANER. Not j...

Yeah, rubber backing pad, and an oversized (probably automotive grade) sanding disk. Most likely just held on with the screw-on center flange, and no adhesive.

Re: The Physics of Protection Question
Having a tough material is to be preferred. Mass is useful for applications where inertia is important, like the helmet. However, a tough material is able to take the force, flex and deform to dissipate the energy, then recover to its original shape. The temper of the steel balances the hardness vs ...
