Re: Plastic mallets?
Well, I have a couple of the teardrop mallets in a similar hard plastic from Harbor Freight. I work 16g all the time with them, and I love them! Dishing is so easy, and the plastic doesn't mar up the metal. Combine those with a rawhide mallet, and I've taken pieces straight to final shape without me...

Oh, that's pretty. The simple solution, since you have extra width, would be to "squish" the helmet a bit to make it more oval. Trade some of that extra side-to-side for the needed front-to-back.

I definitely intend to purchase some mail from Jeystr once our finances are a little looser.
The only other mail I'd jump for instead would be a historically tailored DiY kit from Tom B.

As long as your hand is farther than 4" from the edge of the shield, you don't need a shield basket or gauntlet.

Done the half-swording thing in full harness cut-and-thrust. My opponent and I agreed that armour worn was proof. We were going for the chin underside, the armpits, the insides of the elbows, behind the knees (if we could have reached without exposing ourselves - have not ever worked that scenario ...

Re: Aaackkkk! Need turn shoes quick!
If you have the tools and the knowledge, then it should be doable in a long evening. It also depends on which style of turn shoes you're making. Ankle boots with buckles or leather points? Low, early 15th century ones that flare open below the ankle like a tulip? Regardless, the actual manufacture i...

Well, with the software Jan discovered, you could just as easily build your own with layers of plywood. You could even sand it down to a smooth contour. A lot of wood sculptures were built that way at my alma mater.

Working from that assumption, a pizan could represent a "missing link" in the evolution from aventail to standard, as it were.

Is the assumption, then, that a 14th century pizan would be lined and padded quite a bit in order to achieve the smoothly tapered form seen in the manuscripts?

Re: Discussion of extant mail standards
At first I was a bit confused about the hook on the underlapped flap. In my head, it seemed easier to have the outer flap hook over the underlap. But now, I see the logic behind it. The hook keeps the underlap from falling down and slumping uncomfortably, and the strap and buckle over it keeps every...

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item
They're very nice pieces, especially the 1605. That one, I really cannot see anything wrong...my eye must not be developed enough to see the discrepancies in the form.
I think, on the 1605...too narrow of vervelles? Also, the lack of a chiseled line accentuating the valleys around the eyes and mouth?

Vote for natural fibers. Linen liner, wool stuffing. Wicks up sweat, and rides cool on your head. Unlike the blue blubber. It won't solve the issue of breathing in the warm air of your own exhalations, but it will improve your time in the helmet, and keep you cooler, which will hopefully cut back on...

How much trouble would it be to not predrill the two holes? Would cut down on the loss of time, punching...

I have to agree with Ernst. The fact that there is a hinge there is great evidence of backplate defense, but perhaps not of one piece. It's still a great find. There are a few other interesting details in the first image...the hinged second plate on the rerebrace, perhaps enclosing the upper arm...t...
