Re: New pics of an old corrazina. Analysis?

Fundamentally, there isn't a huge difference in construction between a corrazina and a covered globose, just different plates. Here's an internal shot of that corrazina recreation. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/340936634266742895/ As Henrick mentioned, there is an overlap on the front plates, typical...

Re: New pics of an old corrazina. Analysis?

It's actually a split breastplate with one piece slightly overlapping the other and often closed by buckles in period art. Yup. Re: New pics of an old corrazina. Analysis?

Most brigs and corrazinas that I've come across don't have an interior lining, just the exterior layers. It would be onerous to get fabric to lay nicely against the concave surface without either glue or hard attachment. The rivets don't have any fibers trapped underneath them on the inside, and if ...

Re: Steel Thickness?

Welcome to the wonderful madness! Different parts of a harness definitely use different thicknesses of steel. Some parts need more protection, like the vital organs, while others do better with less weight, like hands and feet. Pulling from the Quick Reference table from "Techniques of Medieval Armo...

Regardless, splinted limbs remain popular in Germany longer than most other European countries. A good twenty or thirty years longer. You'll probably have the greatest variety to cull from looking in the year range Henrik mentioned.

Re: SCA finger gauntlet construction?

Well, as far as basic structure, the fingers are all riveted to a strip of leather, one for each finger. The four strips are riveted to a knuckle plate, and that knuckle plate is articulated to the metacarpal with a pair of rivets. The padding, I like to glue to the glove. That way I change out to f...

Re: Easier way for beginners to flatten rings for rivited ma

Instead of a bunging up a butter knife, perhaps a strip of pallet strapping would serve the same purpose. Certainly cheaper per foot than flea-market silverware, and the high-tensile steel might hold up better. Thinner, too, so it'd be easier to slide into place. :)

I resolve to finish all projects I've already started. That means getting in the last 55 eyelets on my arming cotte, finishing my hourglass gauntlets, sabatons, legs and greaves. I have plans for new arms, a corrazina, mail items, and a faceplate for a bascinet, but I've resolved not to start any ne...

Mac , thanks for the Gnoll 3517 image. That explains a lot as far as the (apparent) random strap and buckle on the back of the piece. Not what I had pictured, as far as assembly. Tom , thanks for connecting the dots! :) I probably wouldn't have realized that our very own Cristian was the same as ab...

Thanks for the links, Henrik! That helps explain some extra holes in the overlaps on the lower lames; temporary rivet holes to homogenize the shaping.

Man, look at their Wisby #3 reproductions.

Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit

Let me recommend restricting any leg padding to the knees. Additional bulk on the thighs will only make you build the cuisses too big to look right. Back when I used to fight, I never wore anything heavier than jeans under my mild steel cuisses. The blows will sting, but not bruise. I found this qu...

Re: A vision of a dream - help me perfect my kit

Now there's a thought. I know others have mentioned that the front opening was more of an infantryman thing. I had been keeping it simply for the convenience of getting in and out of it myself, but to buckle on either side would not be too difficult, and it would be nice to have a more homogenous ki...

Speaking of full harnesses, I was excited to see images of this set. It's the first clear set of extant 14th century enclosed upper arms and cuisses I've seen. I'm going to assume that this harness is one of those things that fall into the "fake" category, unfortunately? That fan on the elbow looks ...
