Pinterest might have a big chunk of duplicates, Tom. I know for a fact that yesterday there was a swath of 14th century stuff that I had already pinned a week ago...and Pinterest did the whole "psst! You've already pinned this" when I went to add them to my board.

Best suggestion I can give is, it's sometimes easier to see a process than explain it.

To that end, here is Eric Dubé's YouTube page. Watch every video concerned with making armor.

Mail exposed on the feet and shins. Padded mittens integral to gambeson. Option three: long mail sleeves. Coat of plates ...

No worries at all, mate. No one walks into this craft and knows how to do all of it right the first time. Or even the eleventh time. And you don't need to explain anything to us, or apologize for progress. Take care of yourself first, and keep this craft a pleasurable one, and not a burden. We'll be...

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item

Well, overarching date ranges would be helpful. Sifting through hundreds of 1500-1600 cuirasses (cuirasii?) is pretty, but not helpful if you're trying to track down 1400-1500 white harness. Separating the collection into body, arm, leg, etc defense would also be useful when looking for a specific p...

Re: what to wear with this helm

Mm...a helm like that needs at least a knee-length dress, better if it's mid-calf. It would simply overwhelm a shorter sundress. Perhaps needs a fuller gathering in the skirt, and a high waist, to offset the heavy lines of the face.

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

My advice would be full size drawings of the helmet you want to make. Front and side at the least, from the top is also useful. From those, make profile templates out of heavy paper or thin plywood. Make them to match the silhouette of the helmet from the side and front, and also perhaps the oval sh...

Your elbow looks nice. I do have one suggestion: keep that inside corner radiused into an arc while you're shaping the elbow and fan, then trim the inside edge to its final shape before you move to sanding and polishing. The sharp transition of the edge is focusing stress there while you're working,...

I hate to suggest this, but you can add tags to photos and photo albums in Flickr. You can then view only the images that have that tag. For instance, a tag could be "14th century", "bascinet", or even "fake". There isn't a limit on tags to a photo, so you could be as granular as you liked about it....

That last "sallet" makes my teeth itch. It's not even the right shape for the very roughest mass-produced sallet...which makes the fact that it has a somewhat finished surface suspect, as opposed to being painted...which then makes the cast decorative edging look all the more out of place. And that ...

Something about the dissolved particles essentially plating themsel...

Even for fun and hitting it with sticks, the paint will get scuffed and scraped, and the edge buggered up. A shield is a consumable resource. But, properly edging it, and coating the face wth a good clear coat, can prolong the life of your paint job.

Oh, my branded palm reminded me of this one: All metal in the shop is at a black heat. You can't see it glowing, but it will still flash-fry your skin. This goes double when there are people other than you in the shop. You may always put the barstock heated point down after pulling it out of the for...

Everything in the shop is sharp, heavy, hot, or some combination of the three. If it falls, don't try to catch it out of reflex...get out of its way. In conjunction with the sharp tools tip, polished hammers mean less work and therefore less fatigue, so less chance for injuring yourself when tired. ...

I'm impressed that the hinge half coming from the visor is part of the visor, as opposed to being riveted on afterwards. Also, the ladder construction on the upper half of the hinge, and the hooked pegs on the helmet to lock it in place.

Well, if $200 is your breaking point for a real shield that will stand up to abuse, your best bet will probably be making one. The ones below that price are often junk...good to hang on a wall and look at, perhaps...and you'll quickly find them destroyed if you go smacking them with sticks. For inst...
