As an aside on that image, I love that little loop of cord he has under his aventail that is being used to hang his face-plate. Practical details like that make me so very happy.

One of Spiderman's enemies is a character called the Rhino, Sir Guy.
That was his reference.

The white grey color almost looks like zinc oxidation that you see on galvanized steel. Interesting...and seriously impressive how the other two are holding up. Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Re: Shop safety discussion: Best practices and solutions
Well, since we're getting into the rest of it. Always wear a leather apron when grinding or welding, or doing hot work. I've set myself on fire one too many times with "I'll just grind this weld real quick...". To that point...wear jeans that are in good repair. Having sparks from welding fall throu...

Re: Shop safety discussion: Best practices and solutions
For grinding and sanding, I'm actually really bad about wearing even a dust mask. :( Best practices, at least a dust mask...respirator if you've got one. Ideal? A vacuum booth with either three walls and a suction hood, or a perforated tabletop where the dust is sucked down. Both require a bit of sp...

Green Lens IR safety glasses, like the ones used for glassblowing and checking a pottery kiln...designed specifically for working with things that put off a lot of heat. The lampworking glasses (Didymium) filter yellow flare, but not much UV and no IR. IR shades block UV and IR, but not yellow glare...

A very exciting experiment, absolutely. I'm curious to hear about working properties as well, when the final results come out in the wash. A few things I've wondered while following this: - How is each product applied? Aerosol, painted on, rubbed on, dipped...? - As Mac mentioned, any specific worki...

A couple people have done that, actually. They made the mitten lames look like fingers, by ridging the lame. Looks like finger gaunts from most distances, especially when wrapped around a weapon in motion.

This is a hotly debated question, and one that comes up fairly often. The search function yields lots of useful posts from previous debates, but perhaps some people will weigh in again. :) Click here for search results Generally speaking, the trade-off is a sliding scale of protection vs mobility. Move faster, tip your head away from the incoming blow (so as to increase the chance of a glancing blow), and don't lead with your head.

Re: Peroid cast rings and pendents referance needed.
For which period? The whole scope of history encompassed from Roman to 14th century is a bit massive. I know that you can search "14th century" on Pinterest (I know, I know...) and snag quite a lot of extant rings, jewelry, clothes, etc.

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting
I'm fairly certain this has already been said, but if not... Kettlebells work well primarily because their center of mass is offset from the handle, unlike a dumbbell. It makes many of your smaller support muscles work in order to balance and control the weight. Same thing with a slosh pipe, sandbag...

Re: 50% off Talbot's Inexpensive DIY vervelles this week.
Can't go wrong with Talbot's vervelles. For a few pennies more than cotter pins, you can easily make yourself a really sharp looking helmet. If I didn't already have a hundred or so languishing in my toolbox while I build myself a shop to use them in, I'd snap more up because I know that I'm going t...

Re: Source for Hexagonal Tubing?
If no hexagonal tubing can be found, get some round pipe, a little longer than your finished project, with threaded ends. Not a big deal if you can't thread the ends, you'll just need to weld instead of using threaded caps. Cap one end, fill with sand, cap the other. Using soapstone or a scratch awl...

That said, a coat of plates would provide better compressive movement across the chest, as is needed when drawing a bow. The trade off is a less rigid protective cover for your wife's tender areas. Later breastplates have additional sliding plates in this region (front of the shoulder/armpit, into t...

Re: Female torso armor
You're heading the right direction, going for the 14-15th century. The globose breastplate, as Ckanite said, should actually work with little to no modification. It's designed to have a lot of empty space between the metal and your vitals. As far as total protection, both centuries work well...late ...

Wade, do you find that you have to start with appreciably thicker metal to do this, or is the thinning of the underlaps reasonable enough that you stay with the same gauge you might have used for curved lames?

Very nice! And if you have some experience jewelry making, you can solder half-round wire for the decorative linework, pierce and wire on the pearls, and hard solder on the cab settings for jewels.

Awesome find, Swete. Looks like it's from Rob Masefield (the photographer, not the reenactor), and the event was the Abbey Tournament Festival in Brisbane.
